First Year University: The Honest Survival Guide

From freshers' week to your first assignment deadline — what nobody tells you about first year, and how to thrive anyway.

First year is sold to you as the best year of your life. Sometimes it is. Often it's disorienting, exhausting, and nothing like what you expected. This guide doesn't promise you it'll be easy — it tells you what to actually expect, and how to handle it when the reality doesn't match the brochure.

The First Week Reality

Freshers' week is designed to be overwhelming by people who have forgotten what it's like to arrive somewhere where you know nobody. You will meet hundreds of people in the space of a week. You will not remember most of their names. You will probably not find your closest university friends in the first week — most people don't. The friendships that last usually start forming in October, not September, once the performance pressure of freshers' week has worn off.

You don't have to enjoy freshers' week

If the clubs and socials aren't your thing, that's completely fine. Find one or two societies in your first week and show up consistently — that's a far better way to make genuine friends than a week of nights out.

Managing Your First Assignments

Your first assignment will probably feel harder than it should, even if you did well at A-levels. University expects a fundamentally different kind of writing to school: more analytical, more referenced, less structured around templates. This isn't a reflection of your intelligence — it's a skill set that takes a semester to develop. Use your university's academic skills centre from week one, not as a last resort.

  • Read the marking criteria before you read any material for the assignment
  • Go to seminars even when they feel optional — participation and discussion build understanding faster than solo reading
  • Start your first assignment two weeks before the deadline, even if it's just a plan
  • Use your lecturer's office hours — they exist for this; most lecturers see very few students
  • Academic Skills Centres are free and underused — they can review drafts before submission

Social Life Without Burning Out

The pressure to be constantly social in first year is real, and it's exhausting even for extroverts. You are not obligated to attend every event. It's worth knowing that the students who thrive socially and academically are the ones who are selective — they commit to a few things consistently rather than spreading themselves thin across everything. Quality over quantity applies to friendships, societies, and nights out.

Money and Budgeting

Your maintenance loan is not designed to be comfortable. Plan your monthly budget in the first week of term, not when your bank balance is already low. The biggest unexpected expense for most first years isn't food or rent — it's textbooks, printer credits, and ad hoc social spending that adds up over a term.

  • Set a weekly spending limit in your banking app the day your loan lands
  • Check your university library before buying any textbook — most are stocked
  • Use student discount apps (UNiDAYS, Student Beans) for every non-grocery purchase
  • Cook in bulk once or twice a week rather than buying food daily
  • Know your university's hardship fund — it exists for students who genuinely struggle mid-term

When Things Get Hard

First year is genuinely difficult for many students, and the silence around that makes it harder. If you're struggling academically, personally, or mentally, your university has free counselling services, academic support, and student welfare teams. These services are chronically underused because students assume they need to be in crisis to access them — you don't. You can reach out early.

The students who ask for help early are the ones who rarely need it urgently later.
