Which microeconomics topics come up most?

The microeconomics topics that appear most in essays and exams are demand and supply, the four elasticities, consumer theory, production and costs, market structures, game theory, market failure and behavioural economics. Strong answers combine accurate diagrams with real examples and evaluation of each model's assumptions.

TopicKey ideas
Demand and supplyEquilibrium, shifts vs movements
ElasticityPED, YED, XED, PES
Consumer theoryUtility, indifference curves, budget constraints
Production and costsShort-run and long-run costs, economies of scale
Market structuresPerfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly, monopolistic competition
Game theoryNash equilibrium, prisoner's dilemma
Market failureExternalities, public goods, information asymmetry (Akerlof's market for lemons)
Behavioural economicsKahneman and Tversky's heuristics, Thaler's nudges

For a module that covers only these topics, see microeconomics tutoring; for applied firm-level decisions, see business economics help.

Worked example: calculating price elasticity of demand

Price elasticity of demand (PED) is the percentage change in quantity demanded divided by the percentage change in price. For example, if price rises from £2.00 to £2.20, a 10% increase, and quantity falls from 1,000 to 850, a 15% fall, PED is −15 ÷ 10 = −1.5, so demand is elastic.

StepCalculation
Percentage change in price(2.20 − 2.00) ÷ 2.00 = +10%
Percentage change in quantity(850 − 1,000) ÷ 1,000 = −15%
PED−15% ÷ 10% = −1.5 (elastic)
Revenue before£2.00 × 1,000 = £2,000
Revenue after£2.20 × 850 = £1,870

Revenue falls because demand is elastic: the 15% drop in quantity outweighs the 10% rise in price, so raising the price reduces total revenue.

Worked example: the multiplier and real growth

Two short macroeconomic calculations. Illustrative numbers only.

QuestionWorkingAnswer
MPC = 0.8 in a closed economy with no taxes. Find the multiplier.1 ÷ (1 − MPC) = 1 ÷ 0.25
Government spending rises by £10bn. Find the final change in GDP.£10bn × 5£50bn (in this simple model)
Nominal GDP grows 5% and inflation is 3%. Find real growth.(1.05 ÷ 1.03) − 1≈ 1.94%, roughly 5% − 3% = 2%

In an essay, evaluate the multiplier: leakages into saving, taxes and imports, crowding out and time lags make the real-world effect smaller.

Which macroeconomic models should you know?

The core macroeconomic models are AD-AS, the multiplier, IS-LM, the Phillips curve in the short and long run, the Solow growth model, the Taylor rule, exchange rate and trade models such as comparative advantage. In the UK, the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee sets Bank Rate to meet the 2% CPI inflation target, and the OBR produces fiscal forecasts.

Model or topicWhat it explains
AD-ASOutput and the price level
MultiplierHow spending changes affect national income
IS-LMInteraction of goods and money markets
Phillips curveInflation-unemployment trade-off; expectations in the long run
Solow growth modelLong-run growth from capital, labour and technology
Taylor ruleHow interest rates respond to inflation and output gaps
Monetary policyBank Rate set by the MPC; 2% CPI target
Fiscal policyGovernment spending and taxation; OBR forecasts
TradeComparative advantage (Ricardo), exchange rates

A-Level economics tutoring: AQA, Edexcel and OCR

A-Level economics tutors follow your board's specification and paper structure, so you practise the exact question types, from short data-response questions to 25-mark essays. Each board examines microeconomics, macroeconomics and a synoptic paper over three 2-hour exams. Tutors mark practice answers against the board's levels so you see exactly how to move up a band.

Exam boardSpecificationAssessment
AQA71363 papers × 2 hours
Edexcel A9EC03 papers × 2 hours
Edexcel B9EB03 papers × 2 hours
OCRH4603 papers × 2 hours

How do you test and fix an econometric model?

Start with OLS and check the Gauss-Markov assumptions, then test for common problems and fix them: heteroskedasticity, autocorrelation, multicollinearity and non-stationarity, with panel data needing a choice between fixed and random effects. Report diagnostics alongside results and interpret coefficients in economic terms.

HeteroskedasticityBreusch-Pagan or White testRobust standard errors
AutocorrelationDurbin-Watson or Breusch-GodfreyNewey-West standard errors
MulticollinearityVariance inflation factor (VIF)Drop or combine variables
Non-stationarityAugmented Dickey-Fuller testDifferencing; cointegration (Engle-Granger, Johansen)

Tutors work in Stata, EViews, R, Python (statsmodels) or Excel, using data from the ONS, Bank of England Database, OBR, HM Treasury, World Bank WDI, IMF WEO, OECD, Eurostat and FRED.

Economics help by topic

Students most often need economics help with the topics that combine diagrams and evaluation. Your tutor explains each concept, draws the diagram step by step and shows how to apply it to a real-world example. Common topics include elasticity, market failure, monetary policy and international trade.

TopicKey diagrams and concepts
Production possibility frontierOpportunity cost, efficiency, growth
ElasticityPED, PES, YED and total revenue
ExternalitiesMarginal social cost and benefit, deadweight loss
Economies of scaleLong-run average cost curve
Game theoryPayoff matrix, Nash equilibrium, prisoner's dilemma
Labour marketWage determination, minimum wage, trade unions
GDP and growthCircular flow, AD-AS, output gaps
Fiscal and monetary policyMultiplier, interest rates, quantitative easing
Balance of paymentsCurrent account, exchange rates, trade

If your course is mainly hypothesis testing and regression rather than economic theory, our statistics tutors can help too.

How to write top-band economics answers

Top-band economics answers combine knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation. Define key terms precisely, apply them to the case study or data, build a logical chain of analysis with a diagram, and then evaluate by weighing up factors and reaching a supported judgement. Your tutor marks practice answers against your board's levels and shows exactly how to move up a band.

Where do economics students lose marks?

Economics students most often lose marks for unlabelled diagrams, theory with no real data, missing evaluation, confusing movements along a curve with shifts of the curve, and regression results reported without interpretation or diagnostics. Each can be fixed with practice and clear structure.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Unlabelled diagramsLabel axes, curves, equilibria and shifts
Theory with no real dataUse ONS or Bank of England data
No evaluationUse 'it depends on…' chains with justification
Movement vs shift confusedPrice changes cause movements; other factors shift curves
Regression without interpretationExplain coefficients, significance and diagnostics

Economics tutoring: frequently asked questions

How much does an economics tutor cost?

It depends on the level, the tutor and the session length. You see each tutor's hourly rate before booking and pay per session, with no subscription.

Can an economics tutor help me with diagrams?

Yes. Tutors show you how to draw, label and explain every key diagram, such as supply and demand, externalities, AD-AS and cost curves, and how to use them in answers.

Do you cover AQA, Edexcel and OCR A-Level Economics?

Yes. Tutors teach AQA (7136), Edexcel A (9EC0), Edexcel B (9EB0) and OCR (H460) specifications, using past papers and mark schemes.

Can a tutor help with GCSE or IGCSE Economics?

Yes. Tutors cover Cambridge IGCSE Economics (0455), Edexcel International GCSE Economics and GCSE Economics specifications.

How do micro and macro questions differ in an economics exam?

Microeconomics studies individual markets, consumers and firms. Macroeconomics studies the whole economy, including growth, inflation, unemployment and government policy.

How do I evaluate in an economics essay?

Weigh up the factors, consider short-run versus long-run effects, question assumptions and the size of impacts, and reach a justified judgement rather than just listing points.

Can you help with economics data-response questions?

Yes. Tutors show you how to extract figures from data, calculate percentage changes and use the data as evidence in your analysis.

Do you help with university economics problem sets?

Yes. Tutors work through problem sets in microeconomics, macroeconomics and mathematical economics, explaining each step so you can tackle similar questions alone.

How do I calculate PED?

Divide the percentage change in quantity demanded by the percentage change in price. A value greater than 1 in absolute terms means demand is elastic; less than 1 means inelastic.

What is the difference between a movement along and a shift of a demand curve?

A change in the good's own price causes a movement along the demand curve. A change in any other factor, such as income or the price of a substitute, shifts the whole curve.

What is the Phillips curve?

The Phillips curve shows a short-run trade-off between inflation and unemployment. In the long run, once expectations adjust, the curve is often argued to be vertical at the natural rate of unemployment.

What does the Monetary Policy Committee do?

The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee sets Bank Rate and uses other tools to meet the government's 2% CPI inflation target, while supporting growth and employment.

How do I test for heteroskedasticity in Stata?

After running a regression, use the Breusch-Pagan or White test through Stata's post-estimation commands. If heteroskedasticity is present, re-estimate with robust standard errors and report this in your results.

What is the difference between fixed and random effects?

Fixed effects control for unobserved characteristics that are constant within each unit by using only within-unit variation. Random effects assume those characteristics are uncorrelated with the regressors. The Hausman test helps choose between them.

How do I structure a 25-mark economics essay?

Define key terms, build several developed analysis points with labelled diagrams and real examples, evaluate each with 'it depends' reasoning, and finish with a justified judgement that answers the question directly.

How do I write an IB Economics commentary?

Choose a recent news article, identify the relevant economic concept, explain it with a correctly labelled diagram, apply it to the article's context and evaluate, following your school's guidance and the current IB criteria.

Can you help with AP Macroeconomics?

Yes. Tutors cover the AP Macroeconomics course, including AD-AS, monetary and fiscal policy, the Phillips curve and open-economy topics, with graphing and free-response practice.

Can a tutor help with an econometrics dissertation?

Yes. Tutors help you specify your model, prepare data, run diagnostics in Stata, EViews or R and interpret results, giving feedback on your own chapters.

How do I draw a negative externality diagram?

Draw marginal social cost (MSC) above marginal private cost (MPC), with demand as marginal private benefit. The market produces where MPB = MPC, the social optimum is where MPB = MSC, and the welfare loss is the triangle between the two outputs.

Is my economics work kept confidential?

Yes. Your files and details are used only to help you and are not shared with your school or university. See our privacy policy.
