What Is a Good Turnitin Similarity Score?

A Turnitin similarity score shows how much of your text matches other sources. It is not a plagiarism verdict. Here is how to read the report, why there is no universal safe percentage, and how to fix real issues properly.

There is no universal answer to what is a good Turnitin similarity score, because the score only shows how much of your text matches other sources, not whether you plagiarised. Even well-referenced work usually shows some similarity, because quotations, references and standard terms all match. What matters is what is matched and whether each match is properly quoted and cited, which is what your marker reviews.

This guide explains how the similarity score is calculated, how to read the report, what the AI writing indicator means, and how to fix genuine problems the right way.

What is a Turnitin similarity score?

A Turnitin similarity score, shown as a percentage on the Similarity Report, is the proportion of your submitted text that matches text in Turnitin's databases of web pages, published works and previously submitted student papers. It is a matching tool that helps markers spot passages to check. It does not decide whether plagiarism has occurred; a person makes that judgement.

What is an acceptable Turnitin percentage?

There is no official "acceptable" percentage that applies everywhere. Universities and individual markers interpret scores in context: a literature review full of correctly quoted definitions may score higher than an original data analysis, and a low score can still hide a problem. Some departments publish guidance, so check your module handbook rather than relying on a number from the internet.

What the report showsWhat it usually meansWhat to check
Many small matches from many sourcesCommon phrases, terms, referencesUsually fine if quotes and citations are correct
One large match from one sourceA long passage closely matching a sourceIs it quoted and cited, or does it need paraphrasing?
Matches to your own earlier submissionReused work (self-plagiarism)Check your university's rules on resubmitting work
Matches in the reference listReference entries match other papersNormal, and often excluded by the marker
Matches to another student's paperShared sources or collusionExplain the shared source, or seek advice

How do you read a Turnitin similarity report?

Open the Similarity Report to see your text with matched passages highlighted in colours, each linked to a numbered source in the match overview panel. Click a source to see the matching text. Check each substantial match: is it a quotation in quotation marks with a citation, a common phrase, a reference entry, or a passage that should have been paraphrased and cited?

Key parts of the report:

  • Overall similarity index: the headline percentage across all sources.
  • Match overview: sources ranked by how much of your text they match.
  • Highlighted text: colour-coded passages linked to each source.
  • Filters and exclusions: markers can exclude quotes, the bibliography and very small matches, which can change the percentage considerably.

Why is my Turnitin score high?

A high score is usually caused by long direct quotations, a reference list included in the matching, standard phrases in your field, a template or assignment brief you were asked to include, reuse of your own earlier work, or passages that follow a source too closely. Only the last two are likely to be an integrity concern, and both can be fixed properly before the final submission.

Does Turnitin detect paraphrasing?

Turnitin matches strings of similar text, so light paraphrasing that keeps the source's sentence structure and much of its wording often still matches. Proper paraphrasing, where you fully re-express an idea in your own words and structure and cite the source, usually does not. Either way, paraphrased ideas must still be cited, because using someone's ideas without credit is plagiarism even with new wording.

Can Turnitin detect AI writing?

Turnitin has a separate AI writing indicator that estimates how much of a submission may have been generated by AI tools. It is separate from the similarity score, is not shown to students at every institution and is designed to prompt a conversation, not to prove misconduct. Universities set their own policies on AI use, so check what is permitted for each assignment.

How do you lower a Turnitin score the right way?

Lower a genuinely high score by fixing the cause, not by disguising text. Put direct quotations in quotation marks with citations, cut quotations you do not need, paraphrase properly in your own words and structure, cite every source you use, and add more of your own analysis. Never use word-swapping tools, hidden characters or AI rewriting to evade detection; these are treated as misconduct.

ProblemThe right fixWhat not to do
Long quotationsShorten, quote only key phrases, citeRemove the quotation marks
Close paraphraseRe-read, close the source, rewrite from understanding, citeSwap words with a thesaurus tool
Missing citationsAdd in-text citations and reference entriesLeave the idea uncredited
Too little of your own analysisAdd evaluation and argumentPad with rewritten source text
Reused earlier workAsk your tutor if reuse is allowed, then cite yourselfResubmit without permission

How do you paraphrase properly?

To paraphrase properly, read the passage until you understand it, close the source, write the idea from memory in your own words and sentence structure, then compare with the original to make sure you have not copied phrases or changed the meaning, and add a citation. Good paraphrasing usually also condenses the idea and links it to your argument.

Example (the source sentence is invented to show the technique):

  • Original: "Hybrid working arrangements have been associated with improved employee retention in knowledge-intensive firms."
  • Too close: Hybrid work arrangements are associated with better staff retention in knowledge-intensive companies (Author, 2023).
  • Proper paraphrase: Firms that rely on specialist knowledge appear to keep their staff longer when they allow a mix of office and remote work (Author, 2023).

Common Turnitin misunderstandings

  • "Anything under X% is safe." There is no universal threshold.
  • "0% means no plagiarism." Ideas can be plagiarised without matching text.
  • "Paraphrasing means I don't need to cite." Ideas always need a citation.
  • "The score is the verdict." A marker or panel reviews the matches and decides.
  • "A high score means I will fail." Correctly quoted and referenced material is not misconduct.

When to get support with similarity and referencing

If your draft shows high similarity and you are unsure why, or you need to learn how to paraphrase and cite properly, an academic tutor can go through the report with you and explain how to fix each issue in your own words. FLN Tutors' similarity and referencing support focuses on proper citation, quotation and paraphrasing skills. For final checks, see proofreading and editing and our Harvard referencing guide.

We never disguise copied or AI-generated text. All support follows our academic integrity policy.

FAQs

What Turnitin percentage is considered plagiarism?

No percentage on its own is considered plagiarism. The similarity score shows matching text; plagiarism is using someone else's words or ideas without proper credit. A marker reviews the matches to decide. A 30% score made up of correctly quoted and cited material may be acceptable, while a 5% score could include a copied paragraph.

Does the reference list count towards the Turnitin score?

It can. Reference entries often match other papers that cite the same sources, which raises the score. Markers can exclude the bibliography from the report, and many do. Either way, matches in a correctly formatted reference list are not a concern.

Do quotes count in Turnitin similarity?

Yes, by default quoted text is included in the matching, so long quotations raise the score. Markers can choose to exclude quotations in the report settings. Properly quoted and cited material is not plagiarism, but relying heavily on quotations can weaken your analysis marks.

Can I check my Turnitin score before submitting?

Some universities let students submit drafts to a Turnitin practice area or view their Similarity Report before the deadline; others do not. Ask your module leader or check your virtual learning environment. If you can see your report, use it to find and fix citation problems before final submission.

Does Turnitin check against other students' work?

Yes. Turnitin compares submissions with its repository of previously submitted student papers, as well as web pages and published sources, depending on your institution's settings. Matches with another student's paper can arise from shared sources, but they may also prompt a closer look for collusion.

Is a 0% Turnitin score good?

A 0% score is unusual for academic writing, because references and common terms usually create some matches. It is not a problem in itself, but it does not prove the work is original. What matters is that every idea and quotation from a source is properly cited.

Will paraphrasing tools lower my Turnitin score?

Automated paraphrasing tools can change wording, but using them to disguise copied text is academic misconduct at most universities, and the output often distorts meaning or is flagged in other ways. Learn to paraphrase from understanding and cite the source instead; it is safer and improves your writing.

What should I do if I am accused of plagiarism?

Stay calm, read the allegation and your university's academic misconduct procedure, gather your notes, drafts and sources to show how you wrote the work, and contact your students' union advice service, which can support you through the process. Respond within the deadline and explain honestly what happened.
