What is AP Chemistry?

In short: this course gives one-to-one online tutoring for AP Chemistry. A verified chemistry tutor teaches every unit, calculations, experimental design and free-response technique, using College Board-style practice.

AP Chemistry is a College Board Advanced Placement course equivalent to a two-semester general chemistry course at college. It covers nine units, from atomic structure to electrochemistry, with strong emphasis on calculations and lab skills. The exam is taken in May and scored 1 to 5.

This course covers the full AP Chemistry curriculum one to one with a verified chemistry tutor.

Official specification: AP Chemistry exam (College Board).

For wider support, see our chemistry tutoring page, or the AP Biology course if you are taking both sciences.

What is the AP Chemistry exam format?

The AP Chemistry exam is a hybrid digital exam lasting 3 hours 15 minutes: you answer multiple-choice questions in the Bluebook app and handwrite free-response answers in a paper booklet. Calculators and reference materials are permitted.

SectionQuestionsTimeWeighting
I: Multiple choice601 hour 30 minutes50%
II: Free response71 hour 45 minutes50%

AP exams are scored on a 1 to 5 scale. Exam details from AP Students (College Board).

Which units does AP Chemistry cover?

UnitTopic
1Atomic structure and properties
2Compound structure and properties
3Properties of substances and mixtures
4Chemical reactions
5Kinetics
6Thermochemistry
7Equilibrium
8Acids and bases
9Thermodynamics and electrochemistry

How do you answer AP Chemistry free-response questions?

  1. Show every calculation step with units.
  2. Use correct significant figures.
  3. Justify claims with particle-level reasoning, such as intermolecular forces or Coulomb's law.
  4. Draw clear particle diagrams where asked.
  5. Link explanations to data from the question.

What does a worked AP Chemistry calculation look like?

Here is a typical ideal gas question: how many moles of gas occupy 24.5 L at 1.00 atm and 298 K? (R = 0.08206 L atm mol⁻¹ K⁻¹.)

StepWorking
Equationn = PV ÷ RT
Substitute(1.00 × 24.5) ÷ (0.08206 × 298)
Answern ≈ 1.00 mol

Where do students lose marks in AP Chemistry?

Students most often lose free-response points by not answering exactly what the task verb asks, skipping units or justification, leaving work unlabelled and running out of time on long questions.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Ignoring the task verbAnswer exactly what "justify", "explain" or "calculate" asks
Missing units or justificationShow units and reasoning for every answer
Unlabelled workLabel graphs, diagrams and steps
Time pressurePractise timed free-response sets
Guessing patterns in multiple choiceEliminate options using reasoning

Calculations you need to master

Tutors drill stoichiometry, molarity, gas laws, rate laws and half-life, enthalpy and Hess's law, equilibrium constants and ICE tables, pH and buffers, titration curves, Gibbs free energy and cell potentials, using the AP equation sheet.

How the lessons work

Lessons are live and one to one on video with a shared whiteboard. Your tutor uses released College Board free-response questions and scoring guidelines. FLN Tutors is not affiliated with the College Board. See also AP Biology, IB Chemistry HL and our Chemistry subject page.

AP Chemistry: frequently asked questions

How long is the AP Chemistry exam?

3 hours 15 minutes: 60 multiple-choice and 7 free-response questions.

How many units are in AP Chemistry?

Nine units.

Is there an equation sheet?

Yes. A periodic table and equation sheet are provided.

Is a calculator allowed in AP Chemistry?

Yes, in both sections.

How is AP Chemistry scored?

On a scale of 1 to 5.

What is the hardest AP Chemistry unit?

Many students find equilibrium, acids and bases, and thermodynamics the hardest.

How do I get a 5 in AP Chemistry?

Master the calculations, explain at particle level and practise released free-response questions.

Do you use College Board materials?

Yes. Tutors use released free-response questions and scoring guidelines.

How much does an AP Chemistry tutor cost?

The price depends on the tutor and session length. You see the hourly rate before booking, with no subscription.

Can I study online from any country?

Yes. Lessons are online and scheduled around your time zone.

How many multiple-choice questions are on the AP Chemistry exam?

60 questions, worth 50% of the score.

How many free-response questions are there?

7 questions, worth 50% of the score.

Is the AP Chemistry exam digital?

It is a hybrid digital exam: multiple choice in the Bluebook app and handwritten free-response answers in a paper booklet.

Is AP Chemistry hard?

AP Chemistry is often seen as one of the harder AP sciences because it combines abstract ideas with many calculations and lab-based free-response questions. Students with solid algebra and steady practice do well. Equilibrium, acid-base chemistry and thermodynamics usually need the most practice, so a tutor focuses on them early.

Is AP Chemistry harder than AP Biology?

Many students find AP Chemistry harder because it relies on mathematical problem solving and abstract models, while AP Biology involves more content and reading. Which feels harder depends on your strengths: students confident with maths often prefer Chemistry, while strong readers and memorisers often prefer Biology. Both reward regular practice.

Do you offer lessons in my time zone?

Yes. Lessons are online, so you can book times that suit your time zone.

How do I use the ideal gas law?

n = PV ÷ RT with consistent units; 24.5 L at 1.00 atm and 298 K is about 1.00 mol.

Which AP Chemistry topics are hardest?

Many students find equilibrium, acids and bases, and thermodynamics hardest.

How do I answer experimental design questions?

Name the variables, procedure and measurements clearly, and justify each choice.

Where can I find AP Chemistry past exam questions?

College Board publishes past AP Chemistry free-response questions with scoring guidelines on its AP Central website. Work through them under timed conditions, then mark your answers with the guidelines. Your tutor uses the results to choose which units to revisit before the exam.

Can I get an AP Chemistry tutor online?

Yes. You can learn with a 1-to-1 AP Chemistry tutor online through live video lessons from any country. Your tutor works through stoichiometry and equilibrium step by step and shows you how to set out free-response answers clearly under exam timing.
