What is WJEC GCSE Biology?

In short: this course gives one-to-one online tutoring for WJEC GCSE Biology (3400), the Wales specification. A verified tutor teaches both units, the practical assessment skills and exam technique for your tier, using WJEC past papers.

WJEC GCSE Biology is the separate-science GCSE in biology from WJEC, the main exam board in Wales. It is assessed by two written unit exams and a practical assessment, at Foundation and Higher tier, and graded A* to G.

This course covers the full WJEC Biology specification one to one with a verified tutor, focusing on the topics and question types that cost you marks.

Official specification: WJEC GCSE Biology (3400). Papers and content can change, so check the current specification on the board's website.

For wider support, see our biology tutoring page, or the WJEC GCSE Physics course for your other science.

How is WJEC GCSE Biology assessed?

WJEC GCSE Biology (3400) is the Wales specification taught from 2016 and awarded from 2018. It is not one of the new made-for-Wales GCSEs, and Qualifications Wales says it continues until at least summer 2031. It is graded A* to G: Higher tier covers A* to D and Foundation tier covers C to G. Check the current specification on the board's website.

The practical assessment

Unit 3, the Practical Assessment, is untiered and externally marked. Section A, obtaining results, is worth 6 marks and is done in groups over 60 minutes; Section B, analysing, is worth 24 marks and is done individually over 60 minutes. WJEC is updating the practical unit from September 2026, so check the latest arrangements with your school.

Tutors help you practise analysing data, drawing graphs, calculating means and evaluating methods, so Section B marks are secure.

For schools in Wales and Eduqas students

WJEC qualifications are taken mainly in Wales; schools in England usually take the same board's Eduqas specifications. Tell your tutor whether you're on WJEC or Eduqas, which specification year, and your tier, and lessons will match it.

What does a worked biology question look like?

Here is a typical calculation: an image of a cell is 30 mm long at × 1,500 magnification. Find its real length.

StepWorking
FormulaReal size = image size ÷ magnification
Calculation30 mm ÷ 1,500 = 0.02 mm
Convert20 µm

Where do students lose marks in WJEC GCSE Biology?

Students most often lose marks through the habits below. Each is easy to fix with practice and feedback.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Units missingGive units with every answer
Vague extended answersUse a logical sequence and key terms
Graphs unlabelledLabel axes with units and plot accurately
Data described, not analysedQuote values and explain trends
Weak evaluation in Unit 3Name specific errors and improvements

How the lessons work

Lessons are live and one to one on video with a shared whiteboard. Your tutor starts with a quick diagnostic, plans lessons around your weakest topics, sets exam-style questions between sessions and marks them against the WJEC mark scheme. Suitable for Year 10 and 11 students, resit candidates and home-schooled students. For specific questions, try homework help or see our Biology subject page.

WJEC GCSE Biology past papers and tutoring: who this 3400 course is for and study plan

WJEC GCSE Biology (3400): frequently asked questions

Who takes WJEC GCSE Biology?

WJEC GCSEs are taken mainly by students in Wales. Schools in England usually use Eduqas, WJEC's English brand.

How is WJEC GCSE Biology assessed?

By two written unit exams and a practical assessment.

What's in WJEC Biology Unit 1?

Cells, organ systems and ecosystems.

What's in WJEC Biology Unit 2?

Variation, homeostasis and micro-organisms.

Is WJEC changing its GCSEs?

Yes. Wales is introducing new Made-for-Wales GCSEs, so check which specification your school follows.

Can you help with the practical assessment?

Yes. Tutors help you understand the techniques and practise data analysis and evaluation. The assessment itself is done in school.

How are WJEC GCSEs graded?

WJEC GCSEs taken in Wales are graded A* to G, not 9 to 1. Foundation tier gives access to the lower grades and Higher tier to the top grades. Eduqas GCSEs in England are graded 9 to 1.

Do you help Eduqas students too?

Yes. Tutors follow the Eduqas specification if that's what your school uses.

How much does a WJEC GCSE Biology tutor cost?

The price depends on the tutor and session length. You see the hourly rate before booking, with no subscription.

Do you use WJEC past papers?

Yes. Tutors use WJEC-style questions and mark schemes.

What are the WJEC GCSE Biology grade boundaries?

WJEC publishes grade boundaries for WJEC GCSE Biology after each exam series, and they change from year to year with paper difficulty. They show the raw marks needed for each grade. Your tutor marks full past papers and compares your scores with recent boundaries to estimate your grade and target the topics that matter most.

Is the practical assessment tiered?

No. Unit 3 is untiered and externally marked.

How does Unit 3 work?

Section A, obtaining results in groups (6 marks, 60 minutes), and Section B, analysing individually (24 marks, 60 minutes).

Is this the new made-for-Wales GCSE?

No. Qualifications Wales says this specification continues until at least summer 2031.

Where can I find WJEC GCSE Biology past papers?

WJEC publishes recent WJEC GCSE Biology past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports on its website, and schools can access more through their secure portals. Use them under timed conditions, then mark your answers carefully with the mark scheme. Your tutor sets past-paper questions topic by topic, then full timed papers closer to your exam.

How do I calculate magnification?

Magnification = image size ÷ real size; convert mm to µm by multiplying by 1,000.

Can I book a single lesson first?

Yes. You can book one session to see if the tutor suits you, with no subscription.

How often should I have lessons?

Weekly lessons suit most students; add extra sessions before exams.

Can my tutor set practice between lessons?

Yes. Tutors can set past-paper questions and go through them in the next session.

Do you offer lessons in my time zone?

Yes. Lessons are online, so you can book times that suit your time zone.

How should I use WJEC GCSE Biology past papers?

Start with questions on one topic while you are learning it, then move to full timed WJEC GCSE Biology past papers near your exam. Mark each answer with the mark scheme and note where marks were lost. Your 1-to-1 tutor uses those notes to plan your next lessons.
