What is SolidWorks used for?

SolidWorks is parametric 3D CAD software used in mechanical and product design. You build parts from sketches and features, combine them into assemblies, and generate drawings that update when the model changes.

Parametric means the model is driven by dimensions and relations, so changing one dimension updates everything that depends on it.

What are the main workflows?

Document typeWhat you doTypical output
PartSketch, extrude, cut, filletA single component
AssemblyInsert parts, add matesA working mechanism
DrawingViews, dimensions, tolerancesA manufacturing drawing

Coursework usually asks for all three, plus sometimes a simple simulation study.

How do you build a part?

  1. Choose a plane and open a sketch.
  2. Draw the profile and add relations.
  3. Add dimensions until the sketch is fully defined, when it turns black.
  4. Apply a feature such as extrude or revolve.
  5. Add further features in a sensible order.
  6. Check the feature tree for errors before saving.

A fully defined sketch is important, because an under-defined sketch can move unexpectedly when you edit the model later.

What are mates in an assembly?

Mates set how components relate to each other. Standard mates include coincident, concentric, parallel, perpendicular, tangent and distance.

A rigid body in space has six degrees of freedom. Mates remove them one by one, so a part can be fully fixed or left free to rotate or slide. If a part still moves when it should not, a mate is missing; if you get an error, the mates conflict.

Worked example: fixing an over-defined assembly

A shaft should spin inside a housing but SolidWorks reports the mates are over-defined.

Typical cause: a concentric mate already removes the radial freedom, and a coincident mate on a face sets the axial position, but a third mate such as parallel on a flat face then removes the rotation that the design needs.

Fix: suppress or delete the third mate and check the shaft rotates. Add a limit mate only if the motion needs restricting. In a report, say which degrees of freedom you intended to leave free.

What is FEA in SolidWorks Simulation?

Finite element analysis divides the model into small elements and solves for stress, strain and displacement under applied loads and restraints.

Results depend on your inputs: material, fixtures, loads and mesh. A finer mesh usually gives more accurate stress near features, at the cost of time. Always state the assumptions, check that restraints are realistic, and treat sharp-corner stresses with care, since they can be numerical artefacts rather than real.

Where do students lose marks?

  • Leaving sketches under-defined.
  • Modelling a part as one complex feature instead of logical steps.
  • Assemblies that are fully fixed when motion was required.
  • Drawings without tolerances, units or a title block.
  • Presenting simulation results without stating mesh, material and restraints.

Solidworks tutoring: frequently asked questions

What is SolidWorks?

SolidWorks is parametric 3D CAD software used mainly in mechanical and product design. You create parts from sketches and features, assemble them into products, and produce engineering drawings. Because it is parametric, changing a dimension updates the model and its drawings automatically.

What does parametric modelling mean?

Parametric modelling means the geometry is controlled by parameters such as dimensions and relations rather than fixed shapes. Changing a dimension updates the feature and anything that depends on it. This makes design changes fast, but it also means a poorly structured model can break when edited.

What is a fully defined sketch?

A fully defined sketch is one where every entity's position and size is fixed by dimensions and relations, so nothing can move. SolidWorks usually shows it in black. Leaving sketches under-defined is a common cause of models shifting unexpectedly when they are later edited.

What is the difference between extrude and revolve?

Extrude pushes a sketch profile along a straight path to create material. Revolve spins a profile around an axis. Use extrude for prismatic shapes and revolve for round parts such as shafts and pulleys. Both have cut versions that remove material instead.

What are mates in SolidWorks?

Mates define how components are positioned relative to each other in an assembly. Common ones are coincident, concentric, parallel, perpendicular, tangent and distance. Each mate removes degrees of freedom, so the right combination either fixes a part or leaves it free to move as intended.

Why is my assembly over-defined?

An assembly is over-defined when mates conflict or duplicate each other, so the required position is impossible or already fully set. Review the mate list, suppress the most recent mates one at a time and test, then delete whichever is redundant. Fix the cause rather than suppressing many mates.

What is a design table?

A design table uses a spreadsheet to drive dimensions and feature states, creating multiple configurations of one part or assembly. It suits families of similar components, such as bolts of different lengths, and keeps them in a single file rather than many separate models.

What is the feature tree?

The feature tree lists the sketches and features that build a model, in order. It shows relationships and lets you edit, reorder or suppress steps. A clear, logically ordered tree with sensible names makes a model far easier to change and is often credited in coursework.

How do I make an engineering drawing?

Create a drawing document, choose a sheet size and standard, insert views from the model, then add dimensions, tolerances, annotations and a title block. Views update when the model changes. Check projection angle and that the drawing meets the standard your course requires.

What is the difference between first and third angle projection?

They are two conventions for arranging views. In first angle, used widely in Europe and India, the view is projected beyond the object. In third angle, common in the United States, it is placed on the near side. Always show the projection symbol on the drawing.

What is SolidWorks Simulation?

SolidWorks Simulation is an add-in for finite element analysis. It estimates stress, displacement and factor of safety under defined loads, fixtures and materials. Results depend heavily on those inputs and on mesh quality, so they should be checked against hand calculations where possible.

How does mesh size affect FEA results?

A finer mesh captures geometry and stress gradients better, particularly near holes and fillets, but it takes longer to solve. Results should become stable as the mesh is refined, which is called convergence. Quoting a stress without any mention of mesh is a common weakness in reports.

Can SolidWorks files be opened in other CAD software?

Native part and assembly files are specific to SolidWorks and may not open directly elsewhere. Neutral formats such as STEP and IGES allow exchange with other systems, though some parametric history is lost. For 3D printing, models are usually exported as STL or 3MF.

What should a CAD coursework report include?

Include the design brief, your modelling approach, screenshots of the feature tree and model, the assembly with its mates explained, drawings with tolerances, and any simulation with its assumptions. Discuss design decisions and limitations, and follow your department's submission format.

Can a tutor help with SolidWorks assignments?

Yes. A one-to-one tutor can work through sketching, features, mates and drawings with you on a shared screen, and explain simulation set-up. You complete your own assessed work in line with your university's rules. Lessons are online and can use your own brief.
