AP Physics

Our AP Physics course covers the algebra-based mechanics at the heart of AP Physics 1: kinematics, force and translational dynamics, work, energy and power, linear momentum, torque and rotational dynamics, energy and momentum of rotating systems, oscillations and fluids. Your tutor adapts the course for AP Physics 2 or C on request, and you practise the free-response question types. Lessons are live and one-to-one with a verified tutor, who uses College Board style multiple-choice and free-response questions and scores practice answers against the published rubrics. Suitable for students in the US and at international schools sitting the May exams.

What is AP Physics?

In short: this course gives one-to-one online tutoring for AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2 and AP Physics C (Mechanics, and Electricity and Magnetism). A verified physics tutor teaches the content, problem solving, experimental design and free-response technique for your course.

AP Physics is a family of four College Board Advanced Placement courses: AP Physics 1 and AP Physics 2, which are algebra-based, and AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism, which are calculus-based. Each has its own May exam, scored 1 to 5.

This course prepares you one to one with a verified physics tutor for whichever AP Physics exam you are taking.

Official specification: AP Physics exams (College Board).

For wider support, see our physics tutoring page, or the AP Calculus AB course if you are preparing for Physics C.

Which AP Physics course is right for me?

CourseMathsContent
AP Physics 1Algebra and trigonometryKinematics, force and translational dynamics, work, energy and power, linear momentum, torque and rotational dynamics, energy and momentum of rotating systems, oscillations, fluids
AP Physics 2Algebra and trigonometryThermodynamics, electric force, field and potential, electric circuits, magnetism and electromagnetism, geometric optics, waves, modern physics
AP Physics C: MechanicsCalculusKinematics, dynamics, work and energy, momentum, rotation, oscillations

What is the AP Physics exam format?

All four AP Physics exams are hybrid digital exams lasting 3 hours, with multiple choice in the Bluebook app and handwritten free-response answers.

ExamMultiple choiceFree responseTotal
AP Physics 142 questions, 1 hour 25 minutes, 50%4 questions, 1 hour 35 minutes, 50%3 hours

AP exams are scored on a 1 to 5 scale. Exam details from AP Students (College Board).

How do you answer AP Physics free-response questions?

  1. Start from a fundamental principle, such as Newton's second law or conservation of energy.
  2. Draw clear free-body or energy diagrams.
  3. Derive symbolically before substituting numbers.
  4. Check units and limiting cases.
  5. For experimental design, describe measurements, how to reduce uncertainty and how to analyse data with a linear graph.

What does a worked AP Physics question look like?

Here is a typical kinematics question: a cart starts from rest and accelerates at 2.0 m/s² for 5.0 s. Find its final speed and distance travelled.

StepWorking
Final speedv = u + at = 0 + 2.0 × 5.0 = 10 m/s
Distances = ut + ½at² = ½ × 2.0 × 5.0² = 25 m

Where do students lose marks in AP Physics?

Students most often lose free-response points by not answering exactly what the task verb asks, skipping units or justification, leaving work unlabelled and running out of time on long questions.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Ignoring the task verbAnswer exactly what "justify", "explain" or "calculate" asks
Missing units or justificationShow units and reasoning for every answer
Unlabelled workLabel graphs, diagrams and steps
Time pressurePractise timed free-response sets
Guessing patterns in multiple choiceEliminate options using reasoning

Calculus in AP Physics C

Physics C uses differentiation and integration throughout, for example deriving equations of motion, work from a variable force, and Gauss's and Ampère's laws. Tutors make sure your calculus is secure alongside the physics; see our AP Calculus BC course.

How the lessons work

Lessons are live and one to one on video with a shared whiteboard. Your tutor uses released College Board free-response questions and scoring guidelines. FLN Tutors is not affiliated with the College Board. See also IB Physics HL and our Modern Physics subject page.

AP Physics: frequently asked questions

What are the four AP Physics exams?

AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism.

What is the AP Physics exam format?

42 multiple-choice questions in 1 hour 25 minutes and 4 free-response questions in 1 hour 35 minutes.

Is AP Physics 1 calculus-based?

No. AP Physics 1 and 2 are algebra-based; Physics C uses calculus.

Is fluids in AP Physics 1?

Yes. Fluids moved into AP Physics 1 in the 2024–25 course update.

Is AP Physics 1 hard?

AP Physics 1 is often described as one of the more challenging AP exams because it tests conceptual understanding and reasoning, not just formulas. Many students find explaining answers in free-response questions the hardest part. Regular practice with released questions and feedback on written explanations is the most reliable way to improve your score.

Is there an equation sheet?

Yes. An equation sheet is provided for each AP Physics exam.

Which AP Physics should I take?

Physics 1 is the usual first course. Take Physics C if you are taking or have taken calculus and want a calculus-based course.

How do I get a 5 in AP Physics?

Reason from principles, practise all four free-response types and learn from scoring guidelines.

How much does an AP Physics tutor cost?

The price depends on the tutor and session length. You see the hourly rate before booking, with no subscription.

Can I study online from any country?

Yes. Lessons are online and scheduled around your time zone.

How long is each AP Physics exam?

Each exam is 3 hours: 1 hour 25 minutes of multiple choice and 1 hour 35 minutes of free response.

How many questions are on AP Physics exams?

42 multiple-choice questions and 4 free-response questions, each section worth 50%.

What is the difference between AP Physics 1 and C?

Physics 1 is algebra-based; Physics C uses calculus and is split into Mechanics and Electricity and Magnetism exams.

Are AP Physics exams digital?

They are hybrid: multiple choice in Bluebook and handwritten free responses.

Which AP Physics course should I take first?

Most students start with AP Physics 1, which is algebra-based and assumes no prior physics. AP Physics C: Mechanics suits students who are taking or have taken calculus and want a university-level course. Your choice depends on your maths background, your school's offering and the degree you plan to study.

How do I find distance with constant acceleration?

Use s = ut + ½at²; from rest at 2.0 m/s² for 5.0 s, s = 25 m.

How do I answer AP Physics free response?

Show equations, substitutions and units, and justify each claim with physics principles.

Can I use a calculator?

Calculators are permitted; check the College Board calculator policy.

Do you offer lessons in my time zone?

Yes. Lessons are online, so you can book times that suit your time zone.

Where can I find AP Physics past exam questions?

College Board publishes past AP Physics free-response questions with scoring guidelines on its AP Central website, listed by exam. Work through them under timed conditions, then mark your answers with the guidelines. Your tutor uses the results to choose which topics to revisit before the exam.

Can I get an AP Physics tutor online?

Yes. You can learn with a 1-to-1 AP Physics tutor online through live video lessons from any country. Your tutor explains each topic for your chosen exam, works through problems step by step and shows you how to justify free-response answers under exam timing.
