Which physics exam board specification are you studying?

Physics tutors follow your exact specification, because each exam board orders topics differently and sets its own required practicals and question styles. These are the main UK and international school specifications FLN physics tutors teach, with past papers and mark schemes for each.

How do you solve a physics problem step by step?

Solve physics problems with a consistent method: read the question and list the known and unknown quantities with units, draw a diagram, identify the principle that links them, such as Newton's second law or conservation of energy, rearrange the equation before substituting numbers, then check the answer's units, size and significant figures.

  1. List knowns and unknowns with SI units.
  2. Draw a labelled diagram or circuit.
  3. Choose the governing principle and equation.
  4. Rearrange symbolically, then substitute.
  5. Check units, magnitude and direction.

Worked example: uniform acceleration (mechanics)

A worked physics solution lists the knowns with units, chooses the right equation, rearranges before substituting and checks the answer.

Mechanics: a car accelerates uniformly from rest to 20 m/s in 8.0 s. Find the acceleration and the distance travelled.

StepWorking
Knownsu = 0, v = 20 m/s, t = 8.0 s
Accelerationa = (v − u) ÷ t = 20 ÷ 8.0 = 2.5 m/s²
Distances = ½(u + v)t = ½ × 20 × 8.0 = 80 m

Check: with a = 2.5 m/s², s = ut + ½at² = ½ × 2.5 × 8.0² = 80 m, which agrees.

Worked example: a series circuit (electricity)

Electricity: 4.0 Ω and 6.0 Ω resistors are in series with a 12 V supply. Find the current and the voltage across the 6.0 Ω resistor.

StepWorking
Total resistanceR = 4.0 + 6.0 = 10 Ω
CurrentI = V ÷ R = 12 ÷ 10 = 1.2 A
Voltage across 6.0 ΩV = IR = 1.2 × 6.0 = 7.2 V
Check1.2 × 4.0 = 4.8 V; 4.8 + 7.2 = 12 V ✓

The larger resistor takes the larger share of the voltage, as expected in a series circuit.

Worked example: energy and a falling object

An illustrative energy question: a 2.0 kg ball is dropped from rest from a height of 5.0 m. Ignoring air resistance and taking g = 9.81 m/s², find its kinetic energy and speed just before it hits the ground.

StepWorking
Energy lost as gravitational potential energyΔEp = mgh = 2.0 × 9.81 × 5.0 = 98.1 J
Kinetic energy gainedEk = 98.1 J (energy is conserved)
Speed½mv² = 98.1, so v = √(2 × 98.1 ÷ 2.0) = √98.1 ≈ 9.9 m/s
Checkv = √(2gh) = √(2 × 9.81 × 5.0) ≈ 9.9 m/s, and the mass cancels

How do you handle uncertainties in physics practicals?

Practical physics is assessed on how well you measure and analyse data, including uncertainty. Record the uncertainty of each measurement, combine them using the standard rules, plot graphs with error bars and a best-fit line, and use the gradient and intercept to find the quantity you need. Then comment on systematic and random errors.

OperationHow uncertainties combine
Adding or subtracting valuesAdd absolute uncertainties
Multiplying or dividing valuesAdd percentage uncertainties
Raising to a power nMultiply percentage uncertainty by n
Repeated readingsUse half the range as the uncertainty

How do you write a physics lab report?

A physics lab report states the aim, gives the theory and the equation you are testing, describes the method and apparatus, presents raw and processed data in tables with uncertainties, shows a graph with a line of best fit, and discusses the result compared with the accepted value. A strong evaluation explains specific sources of error and realistic improvements.

Tutors help you choose the right graph to linearise data, calculate the gradient and its uncertainty, and write a clear evaluation. See our lab report guide for the general format.

Where do students lose marks in physics?

Students most often lose physics marks by substituting numbers before rearranging, forgetting unit conversions, giving too many significant figures, missing vector directions, and writing explanations that state a result without the physics principle behind it. Each is easy to fix with a consistent method.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Substituting too earlyRearrange the equation symbolically first
Unit conversion errorsConvert to SI units before calculating
Too many significant figuresMatch the data given in the question
Missing directionsState direction for vectors such as velocity and force
Explanations without principlesName the law, such as conservation of energy
Graphs without gradients explainedSay what the gradient and intercept represent

Physics tutoring: frequently asked questions

Can you help with physics homework problems?

Yes. Tutors work through each problem with you, explaining the principle, the equation and every step of the calculation.

Do you help with A-Level physics?

Yes. Tutors cover AQA, Edexcel, OCR and CIE A-Level physics, including required practicals and exam technique.

Can a tutor help with university physics?

Yes. Tutors support first-year and advanced modules, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics and quantum mechanics.

Do you help with physics lab reports?

Yes. Tutors help you process data, calculate uncertainties, plot graphs and write a clear evaluation of your experiment.

How do I get better at physics calculations?

Practise a consistent method: list knowns with units, choose the principle, rearrange before substituting and check your answer. Tutors give targeted practice on the question types you find hardest.

What is the difference between mass and weight?

Mass is the amount of matter in an object, measured in kilograms. Weight is the gravitational force on that mass, measured in newtons, and equals mass multiplied by gravitational field strength.

Do you help with electricity and circuits?

Yes. Tutors explain current, voltage, resistance, series and parallel circuits, potential dividers and internal resistance with worked examples.

Can you help with quantum physics?

Yes. Tutors explain the photoelectric effect, wave-particle duality, energy levels, the Schrödinger equation and quantum mechanics problems.

Do you help with physics for engineering students?

Yes. Tutors explain the physics behind engineering modules, such as mechanics, waves, thermodynamics and electromagnetism, using engineering examples.

Which physics textbooks do tutors work from?

Tutors work from your specification or reading list, such as Halliday, Resnick and Walker's Fundamentals of Physics, Young and Freedman's University Physics or your exam board textbook.

How do I use the SUVAT equations?

List the five quantities (s, u, v, a, t), mark the three you know and the one you need, then pick the equation that links exactly those four. They apply only to uniform acceleration.

How do I calculate current in a series circuit?

Add the resistances to find the total, then use I = V ÷ R. The current is the same everywhere in a series circuit, and the voltages across components add up to the supply voltage.

How do I combine uncertainties?

Add absolute uncertainties when adding or subtracting, add percentage uncertainties when multiplying or dividing, and multiply the percentage uncertainty by n for a power n.

Can you help with A-level physics required practicals?

Yes. Tutors explain the method, uncertainties, graphs and evaluation for required practicals and the practical endorsement.

Can you help with AP Physics?

Yes. Tutors cover AP Physics 1, 2 and C, including mechanics and electricity, with free-response practice.

Can you help with JEE physics?

Tutors help with JEE-style physics practice, explaining mechanics, electromagnetism and modern physics problems step by step.

How do I find g from a pendulum experiment?

Measure the period T for several lengths L, plot T² against L, and use g = 4π² ÷ gradient. Repeat timings over several oscillations to reduce uncertainty.

Is A-level Physics hard?

A-level Physics is demanding because it combines concepts with a lot of maths, but a consistent problem-solving method and regular past-paper practice make it manageable.

Is my physics work kept confidential?

Yes. Your files and details are used only to help you and are not shared with your school or university. See our privacy policy.

How quickly can I get physics help?

Short homework questions can often be explained the same day, depending on difficulty and tutor availability. You choose the deadline when you ask for a quote and see the price before you pay.
