What is Object-Oriented Analysis and Design?

In short: this course gives one-to-one online tutoring in object-oriented analysis and design. A verified tutor explains UML, use cases, class and sequence diagrams, design principles and patterns, with feedback on your own models.

Object-oriented analysis and design (OOAD) is a method for developing software by modelling a system as interacting objects, first analysing what the system must do and then designing how it will do it. It uses the Unified Modeling Language (UML) to describe requirements, structure and behaviour through diagrams such as use case, class, sequence, state and activity diagrams.

This online course teaches Object-Oriented Analysis and Design one to one with a verified tutor who has studied or taught it at university level, at your pace and aligned with your own module.

What does the Object-Oriented Analysis and Design course cover?

TopicKey content
IntroductionObject-oriented model, OOA, OOD and implementation, objects, classes, messages
Unified methodologyUML views, OO design methodologies, the Rational Unified Process
Object-oriented analysisIdentifying objects, classes, associations, attributes and operations
OO conceptsAbstraction, ADTs, class hierarchies, modularity, inheritance, encapsulation, polymorphism
Class modelsClass diagrams, associations, aggregation and composition, multiplicity
Use case modelsActors, system boundary, include and extend relationships
Design and interactionDomain modelling, design approaches, sequence and collaboration diagrams
State and activity diagramsState machines, activity diagrams, packages and subsystems

Which UML diagram should you use?

QuestionDiagram
What can users do with the system?Use case diagram
What classes exist and how are they related?Class diagram
In what order do objects exchange messages?Sequence diagram
How does an object change state over time?State machine diagram
What is the flow of a process or workflow?Activity diagram
How is the system organised into parts?Package or component diagram

How do you go from requirements to a class diagram?

  1. Write the requirements or use case descriptions.
  2. Underline nouns as candidate classes and attributes.
  3. Underline verbs as candidate operations and associations.
  4. Remove duplicates, vague terms and implementation details.
  5. Add associations with multiplicities, and aggregation or composition where parts belong to wholes.
  6. Refine with inheritance for genuine 'is-a' relationships.

What does a worked class diagram question look like?

Here is a short example: "A customer places orders; each order contains one or more products." Turning the nouns and relationships into a class model gives:

ClassKey attributesRelationship
Customername, email1 Customer places 0..* Orders
OrderorderDate, status1 Order contains 1..* OrderLines
OrderLinequantityEach OrderLine refers to 1 Product
Productname, price1 Product appears in 0..* OrderLines

Where do students lose marks in Object-Oriented Analysis and Design?

Students most often lose marks in Object-Oriented Analysis and Design through the habits below. Each is easy to fix with practice and feedback on your own answers.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Wrong multiplicitiesRead each relationship from both directions
Too many or too few classesUse nouns as candidates, then refine
Inheritance overusedPrefer composition unless it is a true is-a relationship
Sequence diagrams out of orderFollow the use case step by step
Patterns named but not appliedShow how the pattern solves the problem

How is it assessed, and how can a tutor help?

OOAD modules are usually assessed by modelling coursework, such as a UML design for a case study, and a written exam on concepts and diagram construction.

Tutors explain concepts, work through practice problems with you and give feedback on your approach. Graded work you submit must be your own, as set out in our academic integrity policy. For deadline-driven guidance, see assignment help.

How the lessons work

Lessons are live and one to one on video with screen sharing and a shared whiteboard. You can follow a full course or book sessions on the topics you find hardest before exams. See also Software Engineering, Object-Oriented Programming and Software Project Management.

Object-oriented analysis and design project: who this course is for, prerequisites and study plan

An object-oriented analysis and design project takes a real problem from requirements to use cases, class diagrams and sequence diagrams, and this course teaches each step with a 1-to-1 tutor who reviews your UML as you build it.

This course suits third-year computer science and IT students taking an OOAD or UML module, and students working on a software design project.

Prerequisites: programming with classes and objects, inheritance and polymorphism, and basic software engineering concepts.

Course length: 40 one-hour lessons across 8 modules.

StageModulesWhat you can do afterwards
1Object-oriented development, a unified methodologyExplain the Unified Process and its phases
2Object-oriented analysis, concepts and examplesFind classes and responsibilities from requirements
3Classes and class models, use case models in UMLDraw class diagrams and write use cases
4Modelling, interaction, state and activity diagramsDraw sequence, state and activity diagrams for a complete system

Where it leads: OOAD builds on our Fundamentals of Object-Oriented Programming course and supports Software Engineering.

Object-Oriented Analysis and Design (OOAD) Course: frequently asked questions

What is OOAD?

A method of analysing and designing software as interacting objects, using UML.

What is UML?

The Unified Modeling Language, a standard set of diagrams for modelling software.

What is the difference between aggregation and composition?

In composition the part cannot exist without the whole; in aggregation it can.

What is the difference between include and extend in use cases?

Include is always part of the base use case; extend adds optional behaviour.

What is the Rational Unified Process?

An iterative software development process built around UML models.

Which tools are used for UML?

Tools such as StarUML, Visual Paradigm, draw.io or Enterprise Architect.

Can you help with my UML coursework?

Tutors give feedback on your diagrams; the work you submit must be your own.

Can you help me prepare for my OOAD exam?

Yes. Tutors practise diagram construction from case studies.

How much does an OOAD tutor cost?

The price depends on the tutor and session length. You see the hourly rate before booking, with no subscription.

Can a tutor do my assignment for me?

No. Tutors explain, guide and give feedback so you can complete your own work, in line with our academic integrity policy.

How do I find classes from requirements?

Identify key nouns as candidate classes, then remove duplicates and attributes.

What are SOLID principles?

Five design principles: single responsibility, open-closed, Liskov substitution, interface segregation and dependency inversion.

What is a sequence diagram?

A UML diagram showing how objects interact over time for a scenario.

What is a design pattern?

A reusable solution to a common design problem, such as Singleton or Observer.

What is multiplicity in UML?

The number of instances that can take part in a relationship, such as 1..*.

When should I use inheritance?

When there is a genuine is-a relationship and shared behaviour.

What is object-oriented analysis and design, with an example?

Object-oriented analysis and design models a system as interacting objects. For a library system, analysis identifies objects such as Member, Book and Loan and what users need to do. Design then defines their classes, attributes, methods and interactions in UML diagrams, such as a sequence diagram for borrowing a book, before coding starts.

What are the advantages of object-oriented analysis and design?

Object-oriented analysis and design models a system as interacting objects, which makes designs easier to understand, reuse and change. Encapsulation hides internal details, inheritance and polymorphism support reuse, and UML diagrams help teams agree on the design before coding. Exams often ask you to draw use case, class and sequence diagrams.

Do you offer lessons in my time zone?

Yes. Lessons are online, so you can book times that suit your time zone.

Which book is best for object-oriented analysis and design?

Two widely used books are Object-Oriented Analysis and Design with Applications by Grady Booch and others, and Applying UML and Patterns by Craig Larman. Larman is often preferred for its step-by-step case studies. Your tutor follows the book your module sets and adds exam-style UML questions.

What are good object-oriented analysis and design project ideas?

Good object-oriented analysis and design project ideas include a library management system, hospital appointment system, online shopping cart, hotel booking system and student course registration. Each has clear users, objects and workflows, which suit use case, class and sequence diagrams. Choose one small enough to model completely, and check the scope with your supervisor.
