What is Fusion 360?

Autodesk Fusion (still widely called Fusion 360) is a cloud-based CAD, CAM and CAE tool. In one program you can sketch and model parts, build assemblies with joints, produce engineering drawings, run basic simulation such as static stress, and generate CNC toolpaths. Students use it in product design, mechanical engineering, robotics and D&T courses because it combines parametric modelling with manufacturing.

In short: Fusion 360 help from FLN Tutors (Freelancer Network) means a CAD tutor works through your own design with you, from fully constrained sketches to assemblies, drawings and CAM, so you can build and explain the model yourself.

Worked example: a fully constrained parametric sketch

Goal: model a 100 mm × 60 mm mounting plate, 8 mm thick, with four 6 mm holes 10 mm in from each edge.

  1. Open Change Parameters and add user parameters: `length = 100 mm`, `width = 60 mm`, `thk = 8 mm`, `inset = 10 mm`, `hole_d = 6 mm`.
  2. Create a sketch on the XY plane and draw a center rectangle from the origin; dimension it as `length` by `width`.
  3. Draw one circle, dimension its diameter as `hole_d` and its distance from two edges as `inset`.
  4. Use a rectangular pattern (2 × 2) or mirror about the origin lines to place the other holes.
  5. Check that the sketch turns black (fully constrained) and then Extrude the profile by `thk`.
  6. Change `length` to 120 mm in the parameters table: the plate and hole positions update automatically.

This is what markers mean by design intent: dimensions and constraints that update predictably.

Worked example: an assembly with joints

For a simple hinge with two leaves and a pin:

  1. Make each leaf and the pin a separate component (not just separate bodies), and activate the component before editing it.
  2. Ground the first leaf so it cannot move.
  3. Add a Revolute joint between the pin's axis and the hole of the first leaf, then another between the pin and the second leaf.
  4. Set joint limits (for example 0° to 180°) so the hinge cannot pass through itself.
  5. Use Drive Joints or Motion Study to check the movement, and run Interference to find any clashes.

Common errors are building everything in the root component and using Rigid Groups where a moving joint was needed.

How do you approach a Fusion 360 project step by step?

  1. Read the brief and list critical dimensions, materials and manufacturing method.
  2. Set up user parameters for key sizes before you sketch.
  3. Build one component per physical part, with fully constrained sketches.
  4. Assemble with joints, check motion and interference.
  5. Run any required simulation with realistic loads and constraints, and record the safety factor.
  6. Produce drawings and renders, then set up CAM if the brief includes manufacturing.
  7. Save versions as you go, so you can show design development in your portfolio.

Where do students lose marks in Fusion 360 work?

Common mistakeWhat to do instead
Unconstrained (blue) sketchesAdd dimensions and constraints until the sketch turns black
One component for everythingCreate a component for each part
Hard-coded numbersUse parameters so the design can change
Drawings with missing or duplicate dimensionsDimension each feature once, in the clearest view
Simulation with unrealistic loads or fixturesBase loads on the brief and explain assumptions
CAM toolpaths without checking stock and tool sizesSimulate toolpaths and check for gouges before posting

Fusion 360 in courses

Fusion 360 is used in GCSE and A-Level Design and Technology, BTEC and university engineering, product design and robotics projects, makerspaces and many US engineering technology courses. Autodesk offers an education licence for eligible students and educators. A tutor adapts sessions to your brief, whether that is a single part, an assembly, a simulation report or a CNC project.

Fusion 360 compared with other CAD tools

Fusion 360 is cloud-based and combines CAD, CAM and simulation in one package, which suits students and small teams. SolidWorks and Inventor are desktop tools common in industry and university labs, and Onshape is fully browser-based. The core skills transfer between them: constrained sketches, features, assemblies with mates or joints, and drawings.

Autodesk Fusion-360 tutoring: frequently asked questions

Is Fusion 360 free for students?

Autodesk offers an education licence that eligible students and educators can apply for through the Autodesk Education Community. There is also a personal-use licence with some feature limits for hobby projects. Licence terms change from time to time, so check Autodesk's current eligibility rules before you install it for coursework.

Is Fusion 360 hard to learn?

Most students can model simple parts within a few sessions, because the interface is clear and sketching is intuitive. It becomes harder with assemblies, parametric design, surfacing and CAM. Learning to fully constrain sketches and use components correctly from the start makes later work much easier, and a tutor helps you avoid habits that cause problems.

What is a fully constrained sketch in Fusion 360?

A fully constrained sketch has enough dimensions and geometric constraints that nothing can move unexpectedly. In Fusion 360, constrained lines turn black while under-constrained lines stay blue. Fully constrained sketches update predictably when you change parameters, which is what markers look for when they assess design intent.

What is the difference between a body and a component in Fusion 360?

A body is a piece of 3D geometry, while a component is a container that can hold bodies, sketches and its own origin. Only components can move independently and be joined in an assembly. Creating a separate component for each physical part is one of the most important habits in Fusion 360.

How do joints work in Fusion 360?

Joints define how components move relative to each other. Common types include rigid, revolute for hinges, slider for linear motion, cylindrical, pin-slot, planar and ball. You place joints on snap points such as hole centres, set limits if needed, and test the motion with Drive Joints or a motion study.

Can Fusion 360 do stress analysis?

Yes. The Simulation workspace includes static stress, modal frequency and thermal studies, among others. You assign materials, apply fixed constraints and loads, mesh the model and solve. Some advanced studies use cloud credits. Always explain your assumptions and check results against a hand calculation where you can.

How do I make an engineering drawing in Fusion 360?

Create a new drawing from the design, choose a template and sheet size, then place a base view and projected views. Add dimensions, centre marks, section or detail views where needed, and fill in the title block. Dimension each feature once and use the view that shows it most clearly.

What is CAM in Fusion 360?

CAM stands for computer-aided manufacturing. In the Manufacture workspace you define the stock and set up machining operations such as facing, adaptive clearing, contour and drilling, choose tools and feeds, simulate the toolpaths and post-process them into G-code for a specific CNC machine. Always simulate before sending code to a machine.

What are user parameters in Fusion 360?

User parameters are named values, such as length or wall thickness, that you define in Change Parameters and use in dimensions and features. Changing a parameter updates every feature that uses it. Parameters make designs easy to modify and show markers that you planned the model rather than typing fixed numbers.

Is Fusion 360 better than SolidWorks?

Neither is better for every case. Fusion 360 is cloud-based, combines CAD, CAM and simulation, and suits students and small teams. SolidWorks is a desktop tool widely used in industry with powerful assemblies and add-ins. The core skills transfer, so choose the tool your course or employer expects.

Why does my Fusion 360 sketch not extrude?

Usually the profile is not closed: there may be a small gap, overlapping lines or an extra line inside the shape. Check that the area you want shades as a profile, trim or join loose lines, and look for duplicated geometry. Fully constraining the sketch often reveals where the problem is.

Can I use Fusion 360 for GCSE or A-Level Design and Technology?

Yes. Many schools use Fusion 360 for D&T coursework because it supports modelling, rendering, drawings and CAM for laser cutters or CNC routers. Examiners value clear design development, so save versions and include screenshots of your iterations, not just the final render, in your portfolio.

Can a tutor help with my Fusion 360 project?

Yes. A CAD tutor works on your own project with you, showing how to set up parameters, constrain sketches, build an assembly, create drawings or set up CAM. You make the model yourself during sessions, so you can explain every step to your teacher or lecturer and stay within your course's rules.

What file formats can Fusion 360 export?

Fusion 360 can export common formats including STEP, IGES, STL and 3MF for 3D printing, DXF for 2D cutting, and its native F3D archive. Drawings can be exported as PDF or DWG. STEP is the safest choice when sharing a model with someone who uses different CAD software.
