What does automobile engineering cover?

Automobile engineering applies mechanical engineering to vehicles. Courses cover the engine, transmission, chassis, steering, brakes, suspension and increasingly electric and hybrid drive.

Assignments usually combine system description with calculations on gear ratios, braking and performance.

What are the main vehicle systems?

SystemMain partsPurpose
PowertrainEngine or motor, flywheelProduce torque
TransmissionClutch, gearbox, differentialMatch torque and speed to need
Chassis and bodyFrame, suspension mountsSupport and protect
SteeringRack and pinion, linkagesControl direction
BrakesDiscs, drums, hydraulics, ABSSlow and stop safely
SuspensionSprings, dampers, linkagesRide comfort and road holding

Worked example: overall gear ratio and wheel torque

An engine produces 200 N·m. The gearbox is in a 3:1 gear and the final drive ratio is 4:1.

Overall ratio = 3 × 4 = 12

Ideal wheel torque = 200 × 12 = 2,400 N·m

With 90% transmission efficiency, the usable torque is 2,400 × 0.9 = 2,160 N·m. Speed falls by the same ratio as torque rises, which is why low gears give acceleration rather than top speed.

Worked example: stopping distance

A car travels at 20 m/s and decelerates at 5 m/s². Find the braking distance, ignoring reaction time.

v² = u² + 2as, with v = 0

0 = 20² + 2(−5)s, so s = 400 ÷ 10 = 40 m

If the driver's reaction time is 1 second, add 20 m of thinking distance, giving 60 m in total. Doubling the speed to 40 m/s would quadruple the braking distance to 160 m, because it depends on the square of speed.

Why is the differential needed?

When a vehicle turns, the outer wheel travels further than the inner wheel in the same time. The differential lets the driven wheels rotate at different speeds while still receiving torque.

Without it, the tyres would scrub and the drivetrain would be stressed. A limited-slip differential adds resistance so torque is not lost entirely when one wheel has poor grip.

How do you approach an automobile problem?

  1. Identify the system and what is being asked.
  2. Sketch the arrangement and label known values.
  3. Convert units, especially km/h to m/s.
  4. Apply the relationship, such as gear ratios or equations of motion.
  5. Apply efficiency where the question gives it.
  6. Check that the result is realistic for a vehicle.

Where do students lose marks?

  • Using km/h directly in equations of motion.
  • Multiplying speed by the gear ratio instead of dividing.
  • Ignoring transmission efficiency when it is given.
  • Forgetting that braking distance depends on speed squared.
  • Describing a system without explaining why it is needed.

Automobile Engineering tutoring: frequently asked questions

What is automobile engineering?

Automobile engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the design, manufacture and operation of vehicles. It applies mechanical, electrical and materials engineering to systems such as the engine, transmission, brakes, steering and suspension, and increasingly to electric and hybrid drivetrains.

What is the function of a clutch?

A clutch connects and disconnects the engine from the gearbox so that gears can be changed and the vehicle can start smoothly from rest. It transmits torque by friction, and it allows slipping during engagement, which prevents the engine from stalling.

Why does a car need a gearbox?

An engine produces useful torque only over a limited speed range. The gearbox changes the ratio between engine and wheels, giving high torque for starting and climbing and lower ratios for efficient cruising. Without it, the engine could not match the wide range of road conditions.

What is the purpose of a differential?

A differential allows the driven wheels to turn at different speeds while still transmitting torque, which is necessary when cornering, since the outer wheel travels further. It also provides the final drive reduction. Limited-slip and locking types help when one wheel loses grip.

How do disc and drum brakes differ?

Disc brakes use pads clamping a rotating disc, and they cool better and resist fade. Drum brakes use shoes pressing outwards inside a drum, and they are cheaper and can provide a parking brake easily. Many cars use discs at the front and drums at the rear.

What is ABS?

The anti-lock braking system prevents the wheels from locking under heavy braking by rapidly modulating brake pressure. This keeps the tyres rolling, so the driver retains steering control. It does not always shorten stopping distance, especially on loose surfaces, which is a common exam point.

What is the function of suspension?

Suspension supports the vehicle, absorbs road irregularities and keeps the tyres in contact with the road surface. Springs store energy from bumps, while dampers control the resulting oscillation so the car settles quickly. Good suspension design balances ride comfort against handling and road holding.

What is the difference between a two-stroke and four-stroke engine in vehicles?

A four-stroke engine completes its cycle over two crankshaft revolutions and is used in most cars because of its efficiency and lower emissions. A two-stroke completes a cycle each revolution, giving more power for its size but usually higher emissions and fuel consumption.

How is overall gear ratio calculated?

Multiply the gearbox ratio by the final drive ratio. For example, a 3:1 gear with a 4:1 final drive gives 12:1. Wheel torque is engine torque multiplied by this ratio and by transmission efficiency, while wheel speed is engine speed divided by it.

What is the difference between a hybrid and an electric vehicle?

A battery electric vehicle is driven only by electric motors and stores energy in a battery. A hybrid combines an internal combustion engine with an electric motor. Plug-in hybrids can also charge from the mains, which gives a useful electric-only range.

What is regenerative braking?

Regenerative braking uses the electric motor as a generator during deceleration, converting some kinetic energy into electricity for the battery instead of heat. It improves efficiency in urban driving. Friction brakes are still required for strong braking and for holding the vehicle at rest.

What is the chassis of a vehicle?

The chassis is the structure that supports the vehicle's components and loads. In a separate chassis design, a frame carries the body. In a monocoque or unitary design, the body and structure are combined, which saves weight and is used in most modern cars.

What is wheel alignment?

Wheel alignment sets the angles of the wheels relative to the vehicle and road, including camber, caster and toe. Correct alignment gives predictable handling, even tyre wear and good straight-line stability. Incorrect alignment causes pulling to one side and rapid tyre wear.

How does speed affect braking distance?

Braking distance depends on the square of speed, so doubling speed makes it roughly four times longer. Total stopping distance also includes thinking distance, which rises in proportion to speed. Road surface, tyre condition and load all affect the actual distance achieved.

Can a tutor help with automobile engineering assignments?

Yes. A one-to-one tutor can explain each vehicle system, work through gear ratio, braking and performance calculations and check your units and method. You complete your own assessed work in line with your university's rules. Lessons are online and follow your own syllabus.
