What is computer organisation and architecture?

Computer architecture describes what a processor does as seen by a programmer: its instruction set, registers and addressing modes. Computer organisation describes how that behaviour is built in hardware, such as the control unit, buses, pipelines and memory hierarchy.

The module usually mixes explanation with numerical work on cache, pipelines and performance.

What are the main topics?

TopicWhat you learnTypical task
Instruction setFormats, addressing modesDecode an instruction
CPU designDatapath, control unit, registersTrace the instruction cycle
PipeliningStages, hazards, stallsCalculate speedup
Memory hierarchyRegisters, cache, main memoryFind hit ratio and average access time
I/OPolling, interrupts, DMACompare transfer methods
PerformanceCPI, clock rate, throughputCompare two processors

Worked example: average memory access time

A cache has a hit ratio of 0.9, a hit time of 2 ns and a miss penalty of 50 ns.

Average access time = hit time + (miss rate × miss penalty) = 2 + (0.1 × 50) = 2 + 5 = 7 ns

If the hit ratio improved to 0.95, the average would be 2 + (0.05 × 50) = 4.5 ns. A small change in hit ratio has a large effect, which is why cache design matters.

Worked example: CPU time and CPI

A program has 10⁶ instructions, an average of 2 clock cycles per instruction, and runs on a 2 GHz processor.

CPU time = instruction count × CPI ÷ clock rate = (10⁶ × 2) ÷ (2 × 10⁹) = 10⁻³ s = 1 ms

This equation is the standard way to compare two designs. Changing the instruction count, the CPI or the clock rate changes performance, so a question will usually fix two and vary the third.

Worked example: pipeline speedup

An ideal k-stage pipeline executing n instructions takes k + (n − 1) cycles, compared with n × k cycles without pipelining.

For a 5-stage pipeline and 100 instructions: 5 + 99 = 104 cycles, against 500 cycles unpipelined.

Speedup = 500 ÷ 104 ≈ 4.8, close to the ideal maximum of 5. Real pipelines achieve less because of hazards and stalls.

How do you approach a COA problem?

  1. Identify whether the question is about design or performance.
  2. Write the formula before substituting numbers.
  3. Keep units consistent, especially ns and GHz.
  4. State assumptions, such as an ideal pipeline.
  5. Interpret the result rather than leaving a bare number.
  6. Check that the answer is physically sensible.

Where do students lose marks?

  • Mixing hit ratio and miss ratio.
  • Forgetting the miss penalty includes fetching the whole block.
  • Treating pipeline speedup as always equal to the number of stages.
  • Mixing clock cycles with seconds.
  • Describing hazards without saying how they are handled.

Computer organisation and architecture tutoring: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between computer organisation and computer architecture?

Architecture is what the programmer sees: the instruction set, registers, data types and addressing modes. Organisation is how that is implemented in hardware, including control signals, buses, cache and pipelines. Two machines can share an architecture but have different organisations and performance.

What is the instruction cycle?

The instruction cycle is the sequence the CPU repeats: fetch the instruction from memory, decode it, execute it, and store any result. Some descriptions add an operand fetch stage. The program counter holds the address of the next instruction and is updated each cycle.

What is pipelining?

Pipelining splits instruction execution into stages so that several instructions are in progress at once, each in a different stage. It increases throughput rather than reducing the time for one instruction. Hazards can force stalls, so real speedup is lower than the number of stages.

What are pipeline hazards?

There are three types. Structural hazards occur when two instructions need the same hardware. Data hazards occur when an instruction needs a result that is not ready. Control hazards occur after branches. They are handled with stalls, forwarding and branch prediction.

What is cache memory and why is it used?

Cache is small, fast memory between the CPU and main memory that holds recently and frequently used data. It works because programs show locality of reference. By serving most accesses quickly, it cuts the average memory access time, which is one of the biggest limits on performance.

What is the hit ratio?

The hit ratio is the fraction of memory accesses found in cache. If 90 of 100 accesses hit, the hit ratio is 0.9 and the miss ratio is 0.1. It is used with the hit time and miss penalty to work out the average memory access time.

What are cache mapping techniques?

The three common schemes are direct mapping, fully associative and set associative. Direct mapping is simple but can cause conflicts. Fully associative is flexible but costly to search. Set associative is a compromise and is widely used in real processors, so it appears often in questions.

What is the difference between RISC and CISC?

RISC designs use a small set of simple, fixed-length instructions that suit pipelining. CISC designs use more complex, variable-length instructions that can do more per instruction. Modern processors often combine ideas from both, so avoid presenting them as entirely separate in an answer.

What is the memory hierarchy?

The memory hierarchy arranges storage by speed, size and cost: registers, cache, main memory, then secondary storage. Faster levels are smaller and more expensive per byte. The aim is to give the illusion of memory that is both large and fast, using locality of reference.

What is DMA?

Direct memory access lets a device transfer data to or from memory without the CPU moving each item. The CPU sets up the transfer, then the DMA controller performs it and signals completion with an interrupt. This frees the processor for other work during large transfers.

What is the difference between interrupts and polling?

With polling, the CPU repeatedly checks whether a device is ready, which wastes cycles. With interrupts, the device signals the CPU when it is ready, so the processor can do other work meanwhile. Interrupts are more efficient but add complexity in handling and priorities.

What is CPI?

CPI is the average number of clock cycles per instruction. It is used with the instruction count and clock rate to find CPU time. A lower CPI is better, but it must be considered with the clock rate, because designs often trade one against the other.

What is an addressing mode?

An addressing mode is the way an instruction specifies where its operand is. Common modes include immediate, register, direct, indirect and indexed. Different modes give flexibility in accessing arrays and structures, and exam questions often ask you to work out the effective address.

What is Amdahl's law?

Amdahl's law states that the speedup from improving part of a system is limited by the fraction of time that part is used. If only half the execution time can be improved, the overall speedup cannot exceed two, however much that part is accelerated.

Can a tutor help with computer organisation and architecture?

Yes. A one-to-one tutor can explain the datapath and control, work through cache, pipeline and performance calculations and check your reasoning. You complete your own assessed work in line with your university's rules. Lessons are online and follow your own course material.
