What does computer fundamentals cover?

Computer fundamentals is the first module on many computing and IT courses. It covers how a computer is built, how it stores and processes data, and how hardware and software work together.

You usually need both description and calculation: explaining what the CPU does, and converting between number systems.

What are the main parts of a computer?

PartRoleExample
CPUFetches and executes instructionsControl unit, ALU, registers
Primary memoryHolds data in useRAM, ROM, cache
Secondary storageKeeps data when power is offSSD, hard disk
Input devicesBring data inKeyboard, scanner
Output devicesSend results outMonitor, printer
BusesCarry data between partsData, address, control bus

Worked example: binary to decimal and back

Convert 1011 0110 to decimal.

Place values: 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1

128 + 32 + 16 + 4 + 2 = 182

Now convert 182 back by repeated division by 2, reading the remainders upwards: 182 → 91 r0 → 45 r1 → 22 r1 → 11 r0 → 5 r1 → 2 r1 → 1 r0 → 0 r1, giving 1011 0110. The two results agree, which is a useful check.

Worked example: binary to hexadecimal

Hexadecimal is shorter to read, and each hex digit stands for four binary digits.

Take 1011 0110 and split it into nibbles: 1011 and 0110.

1011 = 11 = B, and 0110 = 6.

So the value is B6 in hexadecimal, 182 in decimal. Grouping in fours is faster and safer than converting through decimal.

How is data measured?

A bit is a single binary digit, and 8 bits make 1 byte. Larger units follow in multiples of 1,000 (kB, MB, GB) or 1,024 (KiB, MiB, GiB).

Storage is often sold in decimal units while operating systems may display binary units, which is why a drive can appear smaller than advertised. State which convention you use in an answer.

How do you approach a question?

  1. Decide whether it asks for description or calculation.
  2. For conversions, write the place values first.
  3. Show each step, not just the result.
  4. Convert back to check your answer.
  5. Use correct terms, such as primary memory rather than 'computer memory'.
  6. Give units with every size or speed.

Where do students lose marks?

  • Mixing up RAM and ROM.
  • Confusing primary memory with secondary storage.
  • Losing leading zeros in binary.
  • Mixing bits and bytes, or Mb and MB.
  • Describing a device without saying whether it is input, output or storage.

Computer fundamentals tutoring: frequently asked questions

What are computer fundamentals?

Computer fundamentals covers the basic parts of a computer system and how they work together: hardware such as the CPU, memory and storage, software such as operating systems and applications, number systems and data representation, and an introduction to networks and security.

What is the difference between hardware and software?

Hardware is the physical equipment, such as the processor, memory and keyboard. Software is the set of instructions that tells the hardware what to do, such as the operating system and applications. Hardware cannot do useful work without software, and software needs hardware to run.

What does the CPU do?

The CPU fetches instructions from memory, decodes them and executes them, then stores the results. It contains a control unit, an arithmetic logic unit and registers. This repeated sequence is called the fetch-decode-execute cycle, and it is a common exam question.

What is the difference between RAM and ROM?

RAM is volatile working memory that loses its contents when power is removed, and it holds the programs and data in use. ROM is non-volatile and usually holds start-up instructions. RAM is read and written during normal use, while ROM is mainly read.

What is the difference between primary memory and secondary storage?

Primary memory, such as RAM, is fast and directly accessible by the CPU, but it is usually volatile and smaller. Secondary storage, such as an SSD or hard disk, is slower and larger but keeps data without power. Programs are loaded from storage into memory to run.

How do I convert binary to decimal?

Write the place values from right to left as 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and so on, then add the values where the digit is 1. For example, 1011 is 8 + 2 + 1 = 11. Check by converting your answer back to binary.

Why do computers use binary?

Digital circuits have two reliable states, usually high and low voltage, which map to 1 and 0. Two states are easy to tell apart, so this is less error-prone than many levels. All data, including text, images and sound, is encoded using these two digits.

What is hexadecimal used for?

Hexadecimal is a base-16 shorthand for binary, where each hex digit represents four bits. It is used for memory addresses, colour codes and machine-level debugging because it is far shorter and easier to read than long binary strings, while converting cleanly back to binary.

What is an operating system?

An operating system manages hardware and provides services for applications. It handles processes, memory, files, devices and user access, and it provides the user interface. Windows, macOS, Linux and Android are common examples, and most courses compare their main functions.

What is cache memory?

Cache is small, fast memory close to the CPU that stores frequently used instructions and data. It reduces the time the CPU waits for main memory. Levels such as L1, L2 and L3 differ in size and speed, with L1 being the smallest and fastest.

What is the difference between a bit and a byte?

A bit is a single binary digit, either 0 or 1. A byte is a group of 8 bits and can represent 256 different values. Network speeds are usually quoted in bits per second, while file sizes are usually quoted in bytes, so check the units.

What is an input and an output device?

An input device sends data into the computer, such as a keyboard, mouse or scanner. An output device presents results, such as a monitor, printer or speaker. Some devices do both, for example a touchscreen, which is a useful example to give in an answer.

What is a computer network?

A computer network connects devices so they can share data and resources. A LAN covers a small area such as an office, while a WAN covers a wide area. Devices communicate using protocols, and the internet is the largest example of interconnected networks.

What is the fetch-decode-execute cycle?

It is the repeated process the CPU follows. It fetches the next instruction from memory using the program counter, decodes it to find out what is required, then executes it, storing any result. The cycle then repeats for the following instruction.

Can a tutor help with computer fundamentals?

Yes. A one-to-one tutor can explain the hardware and software concepts, practise number conversions with you and check your answers and terminology. You complete your own assessed work in line with your course rules. Lessons are online and follow your own syllabus.
