What is data analytics for business?

Business analytics uses data to answer management questions: which customers are leaving, which price earns most, where a process is slow, which campaign paid for itself.

The analysis is only half the work. A business analytics answer must end in a recommendation a manager could act on, with its assumptions and limits stated.

The four types of analytics

TypeQuestionExample
DescriptiveWhat happened?Sales fell 8% last quarter
DiagnosticWhy did it happen?Fall concentrated in one region
PredictiveWhat is likely next?Churn risk per customer
PrescriptiveWhat should we do?Target the top 500 at-risk accounts

Most coursework asks you to move up this ladder. Stopping at descriptive, when the question asked why or what next, is the commonest reason for lost marks.

Worked example: customer lifetime value

A subscription costs 40 per month. Gross margin is 70%. Monthly churn is 4%.

Average customer lifetime = 1 ÷ 0.04 = 25 months.

Monthly gross profit = 40 × 0.70 = 28.

CLV = 28 × 25 = 700

If acquisition cost is 250, the CLV-to-CAC ratio is 700 ÷ 250 = 2.8. A ratio near or below 1 means the business pays more to win a customer than that customer is worth, which is the point of the calculation. Note that this simple form ignores discounting, so it overstates long lifetimes.

Worked example: reading an A/B test

Version A: 2,000 visitors, 100 conversions, rate 5.0%. Version B: 2,000 visitors, 130 conversions, rate 6.5%.

Absolute lift = 1.5 percentage points. Relative lift = 1.5 ÷ 5.0 = 30%.

To judge whether this is more than noise you test the difference in proportions. The pooled rate is 230 ÷ 4,000 = 5.75%, and the standard error of the difference is the square root of 0.0575 × 0.9425 × (1/2000 + 1/2000), which is about 0.0074. The difference of 0.015 is about 2.04 standard errors, just past the 1.96 needed for 5% significance, so the result is positive but only narrowly so.

Always state the rates, the lift and the uncertainty. Reporting 30% uplift alone is misleading.

Choosing a method

QuestionMethod
Does X relate to Y?Correlation, then regression
How much does X move Y?Linear regression
Will this customer churn?Logistic regression, tree models
Which customers are alike?Clustering, RFM segmentation
What will demand be?Time series forecasting

Start with the business question, not the technique. A simple model you can explain to a manager usually beats a complex one you cannot.

KPIs and dashboards

A useful KPI is tied to a decision, has an owner, has a target, and can be influenced by someone's actions. Counting everything measurable produces dashboards nobody uses.

For a dashboard: put the headline measures at the top left, show change against a comparison period, keep one message per chart, and label units. Avoid dual axes, which make unrelated series look correlated.

Where students lose marks

  • Reporting correlation as if it proved causation.
  • Quoting a percentage uplift with no base figure or uncertainty.
  • Building a model without checking data quality first.
  • Presenting output with no business recommendation.
  • Ignoring the cost of acting on the finding.

Data Analytics for Business tutoring: frequently asked questions

What is data analytics for business?

Data analytics for business is the use of data to answer management questions and support decisions on customers, pricing, operations and risk. It spans descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive work, and it ends in a recommendation rather than only in a chart or a model output.

What are the four types of analytics?

Descriptive analytics reports what happened, diagnostic explains why, predictive estimates what is likely next, and prescriptive recommends what to do. Coursework usually expects you to move beyond description, because the value of analysis lies in explanation and in the decision it supports.

What is the difference between business analytics and data science?

Business analytics focuses on decisions within an organisation, usually with structured data and interpretable methods. Data science covers a wider technical range including machine learning, unstructured data and data engineering. The boundary between them is blurred in practice, and job titles vary a great deal between employers and between countries.

What is a KPI?

A key performance indicator is a measure tied to an objective, with a target and an owner, that someone can actually influence. Good KPIs are few. Tracking every available metric produces dashboards that are read once and then ignored by the people meant to act on them.

What is customer lifetime value?

Customer lifetime value estimates the total profit expected from a customer over their relationship with the business. A simple version multiplies gross profit per period by expected lifetime. It is compared with acquisition cost to judge whether growth is profitable or merely expensive.

What is churn rate?

Churn rate is the proportion of customers who leave in a period. It drives lifetime value, since expected lifetime is roughly one divided by the churn rate. Define it carefully: monthly and annual churn differ, and voluntary and involuntary churn have different causes.

What is an A/B test?

An A/B test randomly assigns users to two versions and compares a chosen outcome, such as conversion rate. Randomisation is what allows a causal claim. Results should be reported with the base rates and a measure of uncertainty, not as a bare percentage uplift.

Why is correlation not causation?

Two variables can move together because one causes the other, because a third factor drives both, or by chance. Observational data alone cannot distinguish these. Experiments, or careful designs using instruments or natural variation, are what support a causal claim.

What is regression used for in business?

Regression estimates how much one variable moves with another, holding other factors constant, so it is used for pricing, demand, cost drivers and marketing response. Interpret coefficients in business units, and check the assumptions rather than reporting the output uncritically.

What is RFM segmentation?

RFM scores customers on recency, frequency and monetary value of purchases, then groups them. It is simple, needs only transaction data, and is widely used for targeting. It is descriptive rather than predictive, so it suits campaign selection better than forecasting.

What is data cleaning and why does it matter?

Data cleaning handles missing values, duplicates, inconsistent categories, outliers and wrong types before analysis. It usually takes most of the time on a project. Analysis built on dirty data produces answers that look confident and are wrong, so the cleaning steps and the judgements you made belong in your write-up rather than being hidden.

What is a cohort analysis?

Cohort analysis groups users by when they joined, then tracks a measure over time for each group. It separates changes in behaviour from changes in mix, which a single overall average hides. It is standard for retention, subscription and product adoption questions.

What tools are used for business analytics?

Spreadsheets remain common for smaller analyses, SQL for extracting data, Python or R for modelling, and tools such as Power BI for dashboards. Your course will specify which to use. The method and interpretation carry the marks more than the tool chosen.

How do I write up an analytics assignment?

State the business question, describe the data and its limitations, explain and justify your method, present results with clear visuals and units, then give a recommendation with its assumptions, risks and likely cost of being wrong. Follow your course's required structure.

Can a tutor help with data analytics for business assignments?

Yes. A one-to-one tutor can help you frame the question, choose a method, interpret regression or test results and turn output into a recommendation. You complete your own assessed work in line with your course rules. Lessons are online and follow your syllabus.
