The data science workflow we help with

Most data science assignments follow the same workflow: define the question, collect and clean the data, explore it with summaries and charts, engineer features, build and evaluate models, and communicate the results in a report or notebook. Tutors can help at any stage, and explain the reasoning behind each decision so you can justify it in your write-up.

  1. Define the question and success metric.
  2. Collect and load data with pandas or SQL.
  3. Clean the data: missing values, outliers and data types.
  4. Explore: summary statistics and visualisations.
  5. Model: regression, classification or clustering.
  6. Evaluate: accuracy, precision, recall, RMSE and cross-validation.
  7. Communicate: clear charts, a written report or a presentation.

Tools and software for data science: Python, R, SQL and more

Tutors help with the tools most data science courses use: Python with pandas, NumPy, matplotlib, seaborn and scikit-learn; R with the tidyverse; SQL for querying databases; Jupyter and Google Colab notebooks; and Excel, Tableau or Power BI for reporting. Sessions use your own datasets wherever possible, so the skills transfer directly to your assignment.

ToolUsed for
PythonCore language for analysis and modelling
pandas and NumPyData cleaning and manipulation
matplotlib and seabornVisualisation
scikit-learnMachine learning models
SQLQuerying databases
R and tidyverseStatistical analysis
Jupyter notebooksReproducible analysis
Tableau and Power BIDashboards

Worked example: evaluating a classification model

Evaluate a classifier with a confusion matrix and the metrics that come from it: accuracy, precision, recall and F1. Accuracy alone can mislead when classes are imbalanced. Here is an illustrative example: a model screens 200 cases, of which 60 are truly positive.

Predicted positivePredicted negative
Actually positive40 (true positives)20 (false negatives)
Actually negative10 (false positives)130 (true negatives)
MetricFormulaResult
Accuracy(TP + TN) ÷ total(40 + 130) ÷ 200 = 0.85
PrecisionTP ÷ (TP + FP)40 ÷ 50 = 0.80
RecallTP ÷ (TP + FN)40 ÷ 60 = 0.67
F1 score2 × precision × recall ÷ (precision + recall)≈ 0.73

The model misses a third of positive cases (recall 0.67), which matters far more than the 85% accuracy if missing a positive is costly.

Which evaluation metric should you use?

Choose the metric that matches the task and the cost of errors: RMSE or MAE for regression, precision, recall, F1 or ROC AUC for classification, and silhouette scores for clustering. Always compare against a simple baseline and use cross-validation for a reliable estimate.

TaskMetricsWhen to prefer
RegressionRMSE, MAE, R²RMSE penalises large errors; MAE is easier to explain
ClassificationPrecision, recall, F1, ROC AUCRecall when missing positives is costly; precision when false alarms are
Imbalanced classesF1, precision-recall AUCWhen one class is rare
ClusteringSilhouette score, inertiaChoosing the number of clusters

Official documentation: scikit-learn and pandas.

Worked example: MAE versus RMSE for a regression model

A model's prediction errors on five test points are 2, −1, 3, −2 and 0 (illustrative).

MetricWorkingResult
Mean absolute error (MAE)(2 + 1 + 3 + 2 + 0) ÷ 51.6
Mean squared error (MSE)(4 + 1 + 9 + 4 + 0) ÷ 53.6
Root mean squared error (RMSE)√3.6≈ 1.90

RMSE is larger than MAE because squaring gives extra weight to the bigger errors. Use RMSE when large errors are especially costly and MAE when you want a measure that is less sensitive to outliers.

Statistics for data science

Good data science rests on statistics. Tutors explain distributions, sampling, confidence intervals, hypothesis tests, correlation and regression, and how to choose and interpret them correctly in your analysis. Tutors also check your assumptions before you report results. See Business Statistics and Biostatistics for more.

Where do data science students lose marks?

Data science students most often lose marks through data leakage, reporting accuracy on imbalanced data, skipping a baseline model, not using cross-validation, treating correlation as causation and submitting notebooks that cannot be re-run. Each is easy to avoid with a clear workflow.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Data leakage (preprocessing before the split)Split first, then fit scalers and encoders on training data only
Accuracy on imbalanced dataReport precision, recall and F1
No baselineCompare with a simple model first
No cross-validationUse k-fold cross-validation
Correlation treated as causationDiscuss confounders and limits
Notebook won't re-runRestart and run all before submitting; fix random seeds

What data science assessments look like, and what markers want

Data science is assessed in several formats, and each one is marked on different things. Tutors help you understand the brief and the marking criteria before you start.

AssessmentWhat markers look for
Jupyter notebook assignmentsClean, runnable code with outputs explained in markdown
Data-analysis reportsA clear question, appropriate methods, correct evaluation and honest limitations
Modelling projectsBaselines, validation, tuned models and interpreted results
Dashboards and visualisationsAccurate, readable charts that answer the brief

Do you help with R for data science?

Yes. Tutors help with R, the tidyverse, ggplot2 and statistical modelling.

Can you help me clean messy data?

Yes. Tutors show you how to handle missing values, duplicates, outliers and inconsistent formats.

Can a beginner learn data science with a tutor?

Yes. Tutors start with Python basics and simple analyses, then build up to modelling.

Will the code and analysis be explained?

Yes. Tutors explain every step so you can understand and present the analysis yourself.

What is a confusion matrix?

A table comparing predicted and actual classes, showing true positives, false positives, false negatives and true negatives, from which accuracy, precision, recall and F1 are calculated.

What is the difference between precision and recall?

Precision is the share of predicted positives that are correct; recall is the share of actual positives the model finds. Improving one often lowers the other.

What is data leakage?

Data leakage happens when information from the test set influences training, for example scaling data before splitting it. It makes results look better than they really are.

What is cross-validation?

Cross-validation splits the data into k folds, trains on k − 1 and tests on the remaining fold in turn, giving a more reliable estimate of model performance.

Should I use RMSE or MAE?

RMSE penalises large errors more heavily, while MAE gives the average absolute error and is easier to explain. Choose based on how costly large errors are.

What is overfitting?

Overfitting is when a model learns noise in the training data and performs worse on new data. Use cross-validation, regularisation and simpler models to reduce it.

Can you help with Power BI or Tableau dashboards?

Yes. Tutors help you prepare data, choose visuals and build clear dashboards that answer the question in your brief.

Can you help with a data science dissertation?

Yes. Tutors help with the research question, data pipeline, modelling choices, evaluation and write-up, with feedback on your own chapters.

How should I handle missing values in a data science project?

Check why data is missing, then drop, impute (for example with the median) or model it, fitting any imputation on the training set only and reporting your choice.

What is the difference between data science and data analytics?

Data analytics focuses on describing and reporting what happened; data science adds prediction and modelling, often with machine learning, though the two overlap.

Is my data science work kept confidential?

Yes. Your files and details are used only to help you and are not shared with your school or university. See our privacy policy.
