What is a software framework?

A software framework is a reusable structure that gives you ready-made components and a set way of organising code, so you build on it instead of starting from nothing. Unlike a library, which your code calls, a framework calls your code at the right moments (inversion of control). Web frameworks handle routing, database access, templates, security and testing. Popular choices include Django (Python), Laravel (PHP), Spring Boot (Java), Express (Node.js) and front-end tools such as React and Angular.

In short: framework help from FLN Tutors (Freelancer Network) means a developer tutor works through your own project with you, from models and routes to APIs, authentication and deployment, so you can build and explain your code yourself.

How does MVC work?

Model–View–Controller (MVC) separates an application into three parts:

  1. Model: the data and business rules, usually mapped to database tables by an ORM.
  2. View: what the user sees, such as an HTML template or JSON response.
  3. Controller: receives the request, uses the model and returns a view.

A request flows: URL → router → controller → model → database → controller → view → response. Django uses the same idea but calls it MVT: Django's *view* plays the controller role, and the *template* is the view.

Worked example: a Django model, view and URL

```python # models.py from django.db import models
class Book(models.Model): title = models.CharField(max_length=200) author = models.CharField(max_length=100) published = models.DateField()
# views.py from django.shortcuts import render from .models import Book
def book_list(request): books = Book.objects.order_by('-published') return render(request, 'books/list.html', {'books': books})
# urls.py from django.urls import path from . import views
urlpatterns = [path('books/', views.book_list, name='book_list')] ```
Run `python manage.py makemigrations` and `python manage.py migrate` to create the table. The ORM turns `Book.objects.order_by('-published')` into an SQL query, so you write no raw SQL.
Worked example: a Spring Boot REST endpoint
```java @Entity public class Book { @Id @GeneratedValue private Long id; private String title; // getters and setters }

public interface BookRepository extends JpaRepository<Book, Long> {}

@RestController @RequestMapping("/api/books") public class BookController { private final BookRepository repo; public BookController(BookRepository repo) { this.repo = repo; }

@GetMapping public List<Book> all() { return repo.findAll(); }

@PostMapping public Book create(@RequestBody Book book) { return repo.save(book); } } ```

Spring injects the repository through the constructor (dependency injection), and Spring Data JPA writes the queries. `GET /api/books` returns JSON, and `POST /api/books` saves a new book.

Worked example: a React component calling an API

```jsx import { useEffect, useState } from 'react';
export default function BookList() { const [books, setBooks] = useState([]); const [error, setError] = useState(null);
useEffect(() => { fetch('/api/books') .then(res => res.json()) .then(setBooks) .catch(setError); }, []);
if (error) return <p>Could not load books.</p>; return <ul>{books.map(b => <li key={b.id}>{b.title}</li>)}</ul>; } ```
`useState` holds the data, `useEffect` with an empty dependency array runs the fetch once after the first render, and each list item needs a unique `key`.
How do you approach a framework project step by step?
  1. Read the brief and list the entities, pages or endpoints and user roles.
  2. Set up the project with the framework's tool (django-admin, Composer, Spring Initializr or Vite) and use version control from the start.
  3. Design the data models and run migrations.
  4. Build routes and controllers or views one feature at a time.
  5. Add validation, authentication and authorisation.
  6. Write tests for models and endpoints.
  7. Document how to run the project, and deploy if the brief asks.
Where do students lose marks in framework projects?
Common mistakeWhat to do instead
Business logic inside templates or viewsKeep logic in models or service classes
Secrets committed to GitUse environment variables and .env files outside version control
No input validationUse the framework's forms or validation rules
Raw SQL built from user inputUse the ORM or parameterised queries
No testsAdd unit and API tests for core features
Missing READMEExplain setup, dependencies and how to run tests
Frameworks in courses
Web frameworks appear in B.Tech, BCA, MCA and B.Sc Computer Science full-stack and web development papers, final-year projects, UK and US software engineering modules and bootcamps. Course choices vary, so a tutor works in the framework and version your module uses, whether Django, Laravel, Spring Boot, Express, React, Angular or another.
Framework tutoring: frequently asked questions
What is a framework in programming?
A framework is a reusable software structure that provides ready-made components and a standard way to organise an application. It handles common tasks such as routing, database access and security, and calls your code at the right points. Examples include Django for Python, Laravel for PHP, Spring Boot for Java and Angular for TypeScript.
What is the difference between a framework and a library?
With a library, your code is in control and calls the library's functions when needed. With a framework, the framework controls the flow and calls your code, which is called inversion of control. React is usually described as a library for building user interfaces, while Angular and Django are full frameworks.
Which web framework should I learn first?
Choose based on the language you know and your goals. Django suits Python learners and data-focused projects, Laravel suits PHP and quick CRUD apps, Spring Boot suits Java and enterprise roles, and Express with React suits JavaScript full-stack work. Learning one well makes others much easier, because the concepts transfer.
What is MVC architecture?
MVC stands for Model–View–Controller. The model manages data and business rules, the view presents information to the user, and the controller handles requests and connects the two. Separating these concerns makes code easier to test, maintain and extend. Django uses a similar pattern called MVT.
What is an ORM?
An ORM, or object-relational mapper, lets you work with database tables as classes and objects in your programming language instead of writing raw SQL. Examples include the Django ORM, Laravel's Eloquent and Hibernate with Spring Data JPA. ORMs also help prevent SQL injection by using parameterised queries.
What is a REST API?
A REST API lets clients interact with a server over HTTP using standard methods: GET to read, POST to create, PUT or PATCH to update and DELETE to remove resources, usually exchanging JSON. Frameworks such as Spring Boot, Django REST Framework, Laravel and Express make building REST APIs straightforward.
What is dependency injection in Spring Boot?
Dependency injection means a class receives the objects it needs, such as a repository or service, from outside rather than creating them itself. Spring Boot creates and wires these objects automatically, usually through constructor injection. This makes code loosely coupled, easier to test with mocks and simpler to change.
What are React hooks?
React hooks are functions that let function components use state and other React features. useState stores values that change, useEffect runs side effects such as data fetching after rendering, and useContext shares data without passing props through every level. Hooks must be called at the top level of a component.
What are migrations in Django or Laravel?
Migrations are version-controlled files that describe changes to the database structure, such as creating tables or adding columns. In Django you run makemigrations and migrate, and in Laravel you run php artisan migrate. Migrations keep every developer's database in step with the code and can be rolled back.
How do I add authentication to a web app?
Use the framework's built-in or official tools rather than writing your own. Django has a built-in auth system, Laravel offers starter kits such as Breeze, and Spring Boot uses Spring Security. They handle password hashing, sessions or tokens and permissions. APIs often use token-based authentication such as JWT.
Why does my framework app show a CORS error?
A CORS error appears when a browser blocks a front end on one origin, such as localhost:3000, from calling an API on another, such as localhost:8000. Fix it on the server by allowing the front-end origin, for example with django-cors-headers, Spring's CorsConfiguration or the cors package in Express.
How should I structure a final-year framework project?
Use the framework's standard folder structure, separate models, views or controllers and services, keep configuration and secrets in environment variables, write tests for core features and use Git with clear commits. Include a README, database diagram and API documentation, so examiners can run and understand your project.
Can a tutor help debug my framework project?
Yes. A developer tutor can help you read error messages and stack traces, find the cause of bugs, fix configuration issues and improve your code structure. You make the changes yourself during the session, so you understand your project and can explain it in a viva or code review.
Can a tutor help with my Django, Laravel or Spring Boot assignment?
Yes. A tutor explains the concepts your assignment needs, such as models, routing, APIs and authentication, reviews your code and helps you plan features and tests. You write and submit your own code, so you learn the framework and stay within your university's academic integrity rules.
