Python topic map: where students get stuck

This map lists the core python topics, the point where students most often get stuck, and how a tutor helps you past it.

TopicWhere students get stuckHow a tutor helps
Variables, types and inputType errors when mixing strings and numbersTrace values line by line with print or a debugger
Control flowOff-by-one errors in loops and range()Dry-run tables for each loop
FunctionsParameters, return values and scopeSmall functions tested one at a time
Data structuresChoosing lists, tuples, sets or dictionariesA comparison of operations and their costs
Files and exceptionsReading files safely and handling errorswith blocks and try/except patterns
Object-oriented programmingClasses, self and inheritanceBuild a small class model together
Algorithms and complexityBig O and efficient solutionsCompare two solutions on the same input sizes
Data analysispandas indexing and groupbyWorked examples on your own dataset

What topics do Python courses cover?

Python courses usually start with variables, data types, input and output, conditionals and loops, then move to functions, lists, dictionaries and strings, file handling and error handling. Intermediate modules add object-oriented programming, recursion, algorithms and testing, and data science courses add NumPy, pandas, Matplotlib and libraries for machine learning.

LevelTypical topics
BeginnerVariables, types, if statements, for and while loops
CoreFunctions, lists, dictionaries, strings, files, exceptions
IntermediateClasses and objects, inheritance, recursion, modules
AlgorithmsSearching, sorting, Big O, stacks, queues, trees
DataNumPy arrays, pandas DataFrames, Matplotlib charts
Web and appsFlask, Django, APIs, databases

How do you debug Python code?

Debug Python by reading the error message from the bottom up, which names the error type and the line where it happened, then checking the values of variables at that point with print statements or a debugger. Reproduce the problem with the smallest possible input, fix one thing at a time and rerun your tests after each change.

ErrorUsual causeHow to fix
SyntaxErrorMissing colon, bracket or quoteCheck the line shown and the one before it
IndentationErrorMixed tabs and spaces or wrong indentationUse four spaces consistently
NameErrorVariable used before it is defined, or misspeltCheck spelling and scope
TypeErrorWrong type in an operation or wrong function argumentsConvert types and check the function signature
ValueErrorRight type but invalid value, such as int("abc")Validate input before converting
IndexErrorList index out of rangeCheck loop bounds and list length
KeyErrorMissing dictionary keyUse get() or check the key exists
AttributeErrorMethod or attribute the object doesn't have, often on NoneCheck the object's type and return values
ZeroDivisionErrorDividing by zeroCheck the divisor before dividing
ModuleNotFoundErrorPackage not installed in the active environmentInstall it in your virtual environment
RecursionErrorRecursion with no reachable base caseFix the base case or use a loop

A reliable debugging method:

  1. Read the traceback from the bottom up: the last line names the error, the lines above show where it happened.
  2. Reproduce the problem with the smallest possible input.
  3. Print or log the values of key variables at that point.
  4. Step through the code with pdb, breakpoint() or your IDE's debugger.
  5. Write a failing test, for example with pytest, then fix the code until it passes.

Worked example: why does my function's default list keep growing?

A common Python bug comes from using a mutable object, such as a list, as a default argument. The default is created once when the function is defined, not each time it is called, so changes carry over between calls. Use None as the default and create a new list inside the function.

Buggy versionFixed version
Function headerdef add(item, items=[]):def add(item, items=None):
Create the list(the default list is shared)if items is None: items = []
Bodyitems.append(item); return itemsitems.append(item); return items
add(1)[1][1]
add(2)[1, 2] (the same list is reused)[2]

Worked example: summarising data with pandas

An illustrative data task: a sales table has four rows, North 120, South 80, North 100 and East 50, in columns region and sales. Find total sales by region.

StepCode ideaResult
Load the data`df = pd.read_csv('sales.csv')`A DataFrame with columns region and sales
Group and sum`df.groupby('region')['sales'].sum()`East 50, North 220, South 80
Sort, largest first`.sort_values(ascending=False)`North 220, South 80, East 50
Check120 + 100 = 220 for North; overall total 350 matches the original rowsTotals agree

Always check a grouped result against a hand calculation on a small sample before trusting it on the full dataset.

Worked example: why Big O matters

Two ways to find a value in a sorted list of 1,000,000 items.

MethodComplexityWorst-case comparisons
Linear search (check each item)O(n)1,000,000
Binary search (halve the range each step)O(log n)About 20, because 2²⁰ ≈ 1,048,576

For membership tests on unsorted data, a set gives average O(1) lookups, which is why changing a list to a set can make slow code fast.

How do you approach a Python programming assignment?

Start by reading the brief carefully and listing the inputs, outputs and rules, then write the algorithm in plain English or pseudocode before coding. Build the program in small pieces, testing each function as you go, and finish by testing edge cases, adding comments and checking the output format matches the brief exactly.

  1. Understand the brief and the expected output.
  2. Plan the steps in pseudocode.
  3. Write and test one function at a time.
  4. Test normal, edge and invalid inputs.
  5. Tidy, comment and check against the marking criteria.

Which Python libraries should you use for each task?

Choose libraries by task: NumPy for numerical arrays, pandas for tables of data, Matplotlib or seaborn for charts, scikit-learn for machine learning, requests for web APIs, Flask or Django for web apps, tkinter for desktop interfaces, pygame for games and OpenCV for images. Use only what your brief allows.

TaskLibrary
Numerical arrays and mathsNumPy
Tables, cleaning and grouping datapandas
ChartsMatplotlib, seaborn
Machine learningscikit-learn
Calling web APIsrequests
Web applicationsFlask, Django
Desktop interfacestkinter
Gamespygame
Images and computer visionOpenCV

For web projects, see Django help.

How do you write clean, well-structured Python?

Clean Python follows the PEP 8 style guide, uses clear names and docstrings, adds type hints where they help, and runs in a virtual environment so dependencies are reproducible. Markers often give marks for readability and structure as well as correct output.

PracticeWhy it matters
PEP 8 styleConsistent, readable code
DocstringsExplain what each function does and returns
Type hintsMake inputs and outputs clear and catch mistakes
Virtual environments (venv)Keep project dependencies separate and reproducible
Jupyter notebooksExploring and presenting data analysis step by step
.py scripts and modulesReusable programs, testing and larger projects

Official references: the Python documentation and PEP 8.

How is Python used for data analysis?

Python is widely used for data analysis with NumPy for fast numerical arrays, pandas for loading, cleaning and summarising tables of data, and Matplotlib or Seaborn for charts. A typical workflow is to load a CSV file, inspect and clean it, group and summarise the data, visualise the results and explain what they show.

Tutors explain pandas operations such as filtering, groupby and merge, and help you interpret your results. See data science help and machine learning help for more advanced work.

How do tutors help without writing your code for you?

Tutors explain concepts, trace and debug your own code with you, review it for style and testing, and show short worked examples. Many universities run code-similarity checks, such as MOSS or JPlag, and may ask you to explain your code, so submitting code you understand matters. For the wider subject, see computer science help.

  • Line-by-line explanation of errors in your code
  • Reviews against your marking criteria
  • Practice problems similar to your task

Where do students lose marks in Python assignments?

Most lost marks in programming assignments come from code that works only on the example input, and from missing tests and explanation.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Code that fails on edge casesTest empty inputs, large inputs and invalid values
No testsAdd simple tests with assert or pytest
Unclear names and no commentsUse descriptive names and docstrings
Ignoring the brief's required structureUse the functions, classes and file names the brief asks for
Copying code you cannot explainWrite and understand your own code; many courses check for similarity
A report that just describes the codeExplain design choices, testing and limitations

What python assessments look like, and what markers want

Python is assessed in several formats, and each one is marked on different things. Tutors help you understand the brief and the marking criteria before you start.

AssessmentWhat markers look for
Programming assignmentsCorrect, readable, well-tested code that meets the specification
Practical or timed coding examsWorking solutions under time pressure with clean structure
Projects (for example the A-Level NEA)Analysis, design, development, testing and evaluation, documented clearly

Python tutoring: frequently asked questions

Can you help with my Python assignment?

Yes. Tutors explain the concepts your brief requires, help you plan the solution and debug your own code, and check it against the marking criteria.

Can a tutor help me debug my Python code?

Yes. Tutors read the error with you, trace the code line by line and explain the cause and the fix.

Do you help with object-oriented programming in Python?

Yes. Tutors explain classes, objects, attributes, methods, inheritance and polymorphism with examples.

Do you help with pandas and NumPy?

Yes. Tutors explain DataFrames, indexing, cleaning, grouping, merging and NumPy array operations for data analysis tasks.

Can you help with GCSE and A-Level computer science Python?

Can a Python tutor help me fix a Jupyter notebook?

Yes. Tutors can work through Jupyter notebooks with you, explaining each cell and its output.

What is the difference between a list and a tuple?

A list is mutable, so you can change its items. A tuple is immutable, so its items cannot be changed after it is created, which makes it suitable for fixed data.

Do you help with algorithms and Big O?

Yes. Tutors explain searching and sorting algorithms, recursion and time complexity using Big O notation.

Can you help with Python web frameworks?

Yes. Tutors help with Flask and Django projects, including routes, templates, forms and databases.

Which Python version should I use?

Use the version your course or brief specifies, usually a current Python 3 release. Python 2 is no longer supported.

How do I read a Python traceback?

Start at the last line, which names the error type and message, then read upwards to find the line in your own code where it happened.

What does 'NoneType' object is not subscriptable mean?

You tried to index a value that is None, often because a function returned nothing. Check that the function returns a value and that the variable is set.

What is PEP 8?

PEP 8 is the official style guide for Python code, covering naming, indentation, line length and layout so code is consistent and readable.

Should I use Jupyter notebooks or .py scripts?

Notebooks suit data exploration and presenting analysis step by step; .py scripts suit reusable programs, testing and larger projects. Follow your brief.

What is a virtual environment?

A virtual environment, created with venv, keeps a project's packages separate from other projects so its dependencies are reproducible.

How do I use breakpoint() to debug?

Add breakpoint() where you want to pause, run the program, then inspect variables and step through lines in the pdb debugger.

Can you help with CBSE Class 12 Python?

Yes. Tutors explain CBSE Computer Science programs, file handling and Python-SQL connectivity, and help with practical files.

Do universities check Python code for plagiarism?

Many do, using code-similarity tools such as MOSS or JPlag. Tutors help you understand and write your own code so you can explain it.

Is my python work kept confidential?

Yes. Your files and details are used only to help you and are not shared with your school or university. See our privacy policy.

How quickly can I get python help?

Short homework questions can often be explained the same day, depending on difficulty and tutor availability. You choose the deadline when you ask for a quote and see the price before you pay.
