What is Maple?
Maple, from Maplesoft, is a computer algebra system: software that works with exact symbols as well as numbers. It can simplify expressions, solve equations, differentiate and integrate, solve differential equations, work with matrices and draw 2D and 3D plots. Many universities use it in calculus, linear algebra, differential equations and engineering maths courses, often with online assignments through Maple Learn or Möbius.
In short: Maple help from FLN Tutors (Freelancer Network) means a maths tutor works through your worksheet with you, from correct syntax to interpreting results, so you can build and explain your own Maple solutions.
Core Maple commands at a glance
| Task | Command | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Assign a value | `:=` | `f := x^2 + 3*x - 4;` |
| Simplify | `simplify` | `simplify(sin(x)^2 + cos(x)^2);` |
| Factor or expand | `factor`, `expand` | `factor(x^2 + 3*x - 4);` |
| Solve exactly | `solve` | `solve(x^2 + 3*x - 4 = 0, x);` |
| Solve numerically | `fsolve` | `fsolve(cos(x) = x, x);` |
| Differentiate | `diff` | `diff(x^3*sin(x), x);` |
| Integrate | `int` | `int(x*exp(x), x = 0..1);` |
| Limits | `limit` | `limit(sin(x)/x, x = 0);` |
| Solve an ODE | `dsolve` | `dsolve(diff(y(x), x) = 2*y(x), y(x));` |
| Plot | `plot`, `plot3d` | `plot(f, x = -5..2);` |
| Matrices | `LinearAlgebra` package | `with(LinearAlgebra): Determinant(A);` |
Worked example: calculus in Maple
Find the turning points of f(x) = x³ − 6x² + 9x + 1.
``` f := x^3 - 6*x^2 + 9*x + 1; df := diff(f, x); # 3x^2 - 12x + 9 solve(df = 0, x); # x = 1, x = 3 subs(x = 1, diff(f, x, x)); # -6, so x = 1 is a maximum subs(x = 3, diff(f, x, x)); # 6, so x = 3 is a minimum eval(f, x = 1); eval(f, x = 3); # 5 and 1 plot(f, x = -1..5); ```
Result: a local maximum at (1, 5) and a local minimum at (3, 1). In your write-up, show the commands, the output and a sentence linking the second-derivative sign to the type of turning point.
Worked example: solving a differential equation
Solve y′′ + 4y = 0 with y(0) = 1 and y′(0) = 0.
``` ode := diff(y(x), x, x) + 4*y(x) = 0; ics := y(0) = 1, D(y)(0) = 0; sol := dsolve({ode, ics}, y(x)); # y(x) = cos(2x) plot(rhs(sol), x = 0..2*Pi); ```
Check by hand: the characteristic equation r² + 4 = 0 gives r = ±2i, so y = A cos 2x + B sin 2x; the initial conditions give A = 1 and B = 0. Comparing the Maple result with a hand method is what many assignments ask for.
Worked example: linear algebra
``` with(LinearAlgebra): A := Matrix([[2, 1], [1, 2]]); Determinant(A); # 3 Eigenvalues(A); # 1, 3 Eigenvectors(A); b := Vector([3, 3]); LinearSolve(A, b); # x = 1, y = 1 ```
The eigenvalues 1 and 3 have eigenvectors (1, −1) and (1, 1). Load the package with `with(LinearAlgebra):` first, or the commands will not be recognised.
How do you approach a Maple assignment step by step?
- Read the question and plan the maths by hand first.
- Start a fresh worksheet and use `restart;` so old values do not interfere.
- Load packages you need, such as `LinearAlgebra` or `plots`.
- Assign expressions to names and build the solution one step at a time.
- Check each output against a quick hand estimate or a plot.
- Add text regions explaining what each command does and what the result means.
- Export or submit in the format your course asks for.
Where do students lose marks with Maple?
| Common mistake | What to do instead |
|---|---|
| Using = instead of := for assignment | Use := to assign and = for equations |
| Forgetting * for multiplication | Write 3*x, not 3x, in 1-D input |
| Old values reused in a new question | Start with restart; |
| Using solve when no exact answer exists | Use fsolve for numerical roots |
| Typing e^x instead of exp(x) | Use exp(x) for the exponential function |
| Outputs with no explanation | Add text explaining each step and result |
Maple in courses
Maple is used in university calculus, linear algebra, differential equations, numerical methods and engineering mathematics courses, especially in Canada, the US, the UK and Australia. Many departments set online assignments through Maple-based systems such as Möbius. Some courses use alternatives such as Mathematica, MATLAB or SageMath; the maths and the habit of checking results are the same.
Maple tutoring: frequently asked questions
What is Maple software used for?
Maple is a computer algebra system used to work with mathematics symbolically and numerically. Students and engineers use it to simplify expressions, solve equations, differentiate and integrate, solve differential equations, work with matrices, run numerical methods and create 2D and 3D plots. It is widely used in university maths and engineering courses.
What is the difference between := and = in Maple?
In Maple, := assigns a value or expression to a name, for example f := x^2. The equals sign on its own creates an equation, which commands such as solve and dsolve can work with. Using = when you meant := is one of the most common errors, because nothing gets stored.
How do I solve an equation in Maple?
Use solve for exact answers, for example solve(x^2 - 5*x + 6 = 0, x) returns 2 and 3. If the equation has no exact solution, or you want decimals, use fsolve, which finds numerical roots. For systems, put the equations and the unknowns in sets, such as solve({eq1, eq2}, {x, y}).
How do I plot a function in Maple?
Use plot for two-dimensional graphs, such as plot(sin(x), x = -Pi..Pi), and plot3d for surfaces, such as plot3d(x^2 + y^2, x = -2..2, y = -2..2). Load the plots package with with(plots) for extra options, including implicit plots, animations and combining several plots with display.
How do I solve a differential equation in Maple?
Write the equation using diff, for example ode := diff(y(x), x) = 2*y(x), then use dsolve(ode, y(x)) for the general solution. Add initial conditions in a set, such as dsolve({ode, y(0) = 1}, y(x)). For equations without a closed form, add the numeric option to get a numerical solution.
Why does Maple not recognise my command?
The usual causes are a missing package, a spelling or capitalisation error, or a missing semicolon or bracket. Maple is case-sensitive, so Determinant and determinant are different. Commands such as Eigenvalues need with(LinearAlgebra) first. Check the syntax in the help page by typing a question mark before the command name.
What does restart do in Maple?
The restart command clears all assigned variables and loaded packages, so the worksheet behaves as if Maple had just opened. Putting restart at the top of each question stops values from earlier work, such as an old definition of x, from causing confusing errors. Packages then need to be loaded again.
Is Maple better than Mathematica?
Both are powerful computer algebra systems. Maple is popular in teaching, with clickable maths input and course tools such as Möbius, while Mathematica is known for its very wide function library and notebook interface. For most coursework the choice depends on what your university licenses and teaches, because the maths skills transfer.
How do I find eigenvalues in Maple?
Load the linear algebra package with with(LinearAlgebra), define the matrix, for example A := Matrix([[2, 1], [1, 2]]), then use Eigenvalues(A) for the eigenvalues and Eigenvectors(A) for both eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Check one pair by confirming that A times the eigenvector equals the eigenvalue times it.
What is the difference between 1-D and 2-D math input in Maple?
1-D input, also called Maple input, is typed as plain code such as int(x^2, x), which is precise and easy to debug. 2-D math input looks like textbook notation and is quicker for simple expressions, but it can hide errors such as implied multiplication. Many tutors recommend 1-D input for assignments.
Is Maple free for students?
Maple is commercial software from Maplesoft. Many universities provide licences for students, and Maplesoft offers student editions and a free online tool called Maple Learn with fewer features. Check what your institution provides before buying, and use only properly licensed copies for your coursework.
Can Maple show step-by-step solutions?
Yes, for some topics. Maple includes tutors and step-by-step tools in the Student packages, such as Student[Calculus1], which can show steps for differentiation, integration and limits. These are useful for checking your own working, but exam answers still need you to show the method yourself.
Can a tutor help with my Maple assignment?
Yes. A maths tutor can explain the commands your assignment needs, help you debug errors, check your outputs against hand methods and show you how to present a clear worksheet. You build the solution yourself during the session, so you understand it and stay within your university's academic integrity rules.
How do I write a procedure in Maple?
Use proc to define your own function, for example f := proc(n) local i, s; s := 0; for i to n do s := s + i^2 end do; s end proc. Declare local variables, return the last value or use return, and test the procedure with small inputs whose answers you already know.
