What is operation research?
Operation research (operations research, OR) is the use of mathematical models to find the best decision for a problem with limited resources, such as maximising profit or minimising cost or waiting time. It is taught in industrial engineering, management science, MBA quantitative methods, economics and applied maths courses.
- Formulate the problem as a mathematical model
- Solve it with the right method, by hand or with software
- Interpret the result, including sensitivity to the data
- Recommend a decision in plain business or engineering terms
How do you answer an operation research question step by step?
A tutor uses the same method on your own questions, so you can repeat it in exams.
- Define the decision variables in words with their units
- Write the objective function and every constraint, including non-negativity
- Choose the method: graphical, simplex, transportation, Hungarian or a queueing formula
- Show each table or iteration, not just the final answer
- Interpret the optimum in the problem's context and check it satisfies all constraints

How do you formulate a linear programming problem?
Formulation is where most operation research marks are won or lost. Tutors teach a reliable four-step method you can use on any word problem.
- Define the decision variables, for example x = units of product A made per week.
- Write the objective function to maximise profit or minimise cost.
- Write a constraint for each limited resource, plus non-negativity.
- Solve and interpret: graphically for two variables, or with the simplex method or Excel Solver for more.
Worked example: linear programming by the graphical method
An illustrative LP: maximise Z = 3x + 5y subject to x ≤ 4, 2y ≤ 12, 3x + 2y ≤ 18, and x, y ≥ 0.
| Corner point | Z = 3x + 5y |
|---|---|
| (0, 0) | 0 |
| (4, 0) | 12 |
| (4, 3) | 27 |
| (2, 6) | 36 |
| (0, 6) | 30 |
The optimum is x = 2, y = 6 with Z = 36. At this point the constraints 2y ≤ 12 and 3x + 2y ≤ 18 are binding, while x ≤ 4 has slack of 2. The same answer comes from the simplex method or Excel Solver.
Worked example: the same LP solved by the simplex method
The graphical example above, maximise Z = 3x + 5y subject to x ≤ 4, 2y ≤ 12 and 3x + 2y ≤ 18, solved with the simplex method. Slack variables s1, s2 and s3 turn the constraints into equations.
| Iteration | Entering and leaving variable | Working | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Start | — | Basis s1 = 4, s2 = 12, s3 = 18; Z row coefficients −3 and −5 | Z = 0 |
| 1 | y enters (most negative, −5); s2 leaves | Ratios 12 ÷ 2 = 6 and 18 ÷ 2 = 9; smallest is 6 | y = 6, Z = 30 |
| 2 | x enters (−3 left in the Z row); s3 leaves | Ratios 4 ÷ 1 = 4 and (18 − 12) ÷ 3 = 2; smallest is 2 | x = 2, Z = 36 |
| Optimal | No negative coefficients left in the Z row | Shadow prices: 1.5 for the second constraint, 1 for the third; s1 = 2 is slack | x = 2, y = 6, Z = 36 |
The simplex method and the graphical corner-point method give the same optimum. The shadow prices tell you how much Z rises if a binding resource increases by one unit.
Worked example: the Hungarian method for an assignment problem
Assign three workers A, B and C to three jobs at minimum total cost. Illustrative cost matrix (rows are workers, columns are jobs 1 to 3): A = 9, 2, 7; B = 6, 4, 3; C = 5, 8, 1.
| Step | Result |
|---|---|
| Subtract each row's minimum (2, 3, 1) | A = 7, 0, 5; B = 3, 1, 0; C = 4, 7, 0 |
| Subtract each column's minimum (3, 0, 0) | A = 4, 0, 5; B = 0, 1, 0; C = 1, 7, 0 |
| Cover all zeros | Three lines are needed, equal to n = 3, so an optimal assignment exists |
| Assign independent zeros | A → job 2, B → job 1, C → job 3 |
| Total cost from the original matrix | 2 + 6 + 1 = 9 |
Checking all six possible assignments confirms 9 is the minimum.
Worked example: an M/M/1 queue
Customers arrive at a single server at λ = 4 per hour, and service takes on average 10 minutes (μ = 6 per hour). Find the key measures.
| Measure | Formula | Value |
|---|---|---|
| Utilisation ρ | λ ÷ μ | 4 ÷ 6 ≈ 0.667 |
| Average number in the system L | ρ ÷ (1 − ρ) | 2 customers |
| Average number in the queue Lq | ρ² ÷ (1 − ρ) | ≈ 1.33 customers |
| Average time in the system W | 1 ÷ (μ − λ) | 0.5 hours = 30 minutes |
| Average wait in the queue Wq | λ ÷ (μ(μ − λ)) | 4 ÷ 12 h ≈ 20 minutes |
Little's law, L = λW = 4 × 0.5 = 2, confirms the results.
Where is linear programming used in real life?
Linear programming chooses the best use of limited resources. These are the problem types that appear most often in assignments and exams.
| Problem type | Decision | Typical objective |
|---|---|---|
| Product mix | How many units of each product to make | Maximise profit |
| Diet or blending | How much of each food or raw material to use | Minimise cost while meeting nutrient or quality limits |
| Transportation | How much to ship from each source to each destination | Minimise transport cost |
| Assignment | Which worker or machine does which job | Minimise total time or cost |
| Workforce scheduling | How many staff to roster in each shift | Minimise staffing cost |
| Investment | How much to put in each asset | Maximise return within risk limits |
Class 12 linear programming (CBSE/NCERT): the NCERT Class 12 Mathematics chapter on linear programming covers formulating problems, drawing the feasible region and finding the optimum with the corner point method, including bounded and unbounded regions and manufacturing, diet and transportation problems. Operations Research tutoring: frequently asked questions
Can someone do my operation research assignment for me?
An operation research tutor works through the assignment with you rather than submitting it for you. They help you formulate each model, solve similar problems step by step and check your tables and interpretation, so you understand the method and your final submission stays your own work.
What is operation research?
Operation research, also called operations research or O.R., uses mathematical models and analysis to make better decisions. It includes linear programming, transportation and assignment models, network methods such as CPM and PERT, queueing theory, inventory models, simulation and decision analysis, and is used in business, engineering and public services.
How do I formulate a linear programming problem?
Define the decision variables in words with units, write the objective function to maximise or minimise, then write one constraint for each limited resource plus non-negativity. Check that every number in the question appears somewhere in the model, and that the units on both sides of each constraint match.
How does the simplex method work?
Add slack variables to turn inequalities into equations, then move from one corner of the feasible region to a better one. At each step, the most negative coefficient in the objective row chooses the entering variable, and the minimum ratio test chooses the leaving variable, until no improvement is possible.
When should I use the graphical method instead of the simplex method?
Use the graphical method when there are only two decision variables, because you can draw the feasible region and test the corner points. With three or more variables, use the simplex method or software such as Excel Solver. Both methods give the same optimal solution.
What is a shadow price in linear programming?
A shadow price is the increase in the optimal objective value from one extra unit of a constraint's resource, while the solution stays within its valid range. A constraint with spare capacity has a shadow price of zero. Shadow prices come from the final simplex table or Solver's sensitivity report.
What is duality in linear programming?
Every linear programme has a matching dual problem. If the original problem maximises profit using limited resources, the dual minimises the value of those resources. At the optimum, both have the same objective value, and the dual variables are the shadow prices of the original constraints.
What is the difference between the transportation and assignment problems?
A transportation problem ships quantities from several sources to several destinations at minimum cost, with supply and demand totals. An assignment problem is a special case where each agent takes exactly one task. Transportation uses methods such as Vogel's approximation and MODI; assignment uses the Hungarian method.
What is Vogel's approximation method?
Vogel's approximation method finds a good starting solution for a transportation problem. For each row and column, find the penalty, the difference between the two smallest costs, then allocate as much as possible to the cheapest cell in the row or column with the largest penalty, and repeat.
How do I solve an LP problem in Excel Solver?
Put decision variables in cells, write the objective and each constraint as formulas, then open Solver. Set the objective cell, choose max or min, select the variable cells, add constraints and choose the Simplex LP method. Ask for the sensitivity report to read shadow prices and ranges.
How are CPM and PERT used in operation research?
Both plan projects as networks of activities. CPM uses a single fixed time for each activity and focuses on the critical path and time–cost trade-offs. PERT uses optimistic, most likely and pessimistic estimates to find an expected time and the probability of finishing by a deadline.
What is queueing theory used for?
Queueing theory models waiting lines, such as customers at a bank or jobs on a server. From arrival and service rates, it gives utilisation, average queue length and waiting time. Managers use these results to decide how many servers or staff are needed to keep waiting times acceptable.
What is the EOQ formula?
The economic order quantity is the square root of two times annual demand times ordering cost, divided by the holding cost per unit per year. It gives the order size that minimises total ordering and holding cost, assuming steady demand and no shortages or quantity discounts.
Is operation research the same as operations management?
No, although they overlap. Operation research is a set of mathematical decision-making methods. Operations management is the management of how a business produces goods and services, and it often uses operation research tools such as forecasting, scheduling and inventory models to make decisions.
Is linear programming in the class 12 syllabus?
Yes. The CBSE and NCERT Class 12 Mathematics syllabus includes a chapter on linear programming. It covers formulating problems, drawing feasible regions and using the corner point method on manufacturing, diet and transportation problems. Tutors help with board-style questions and with understanding why the corner point method works.
Which software is used for operation research?
Excel Solver is the most common in courses. Students also use LINGO or LINDO, TORA, Python with PuLP or SciPy, R and MATLAB's optimisation tools. For project networks, tools such as Primavera or Microsoft Project are used. Tutors can explain both the software steps and the underlying method.
What do I get with operation research help?
You get help formulating models, step-by-step working for the method your course uses, an explanation of how to interpret results such as shadow prices or queue lengths, and a tutor check of your answers. Help can be live lessons, written worked solutions or guidance on a graded assignment.
How fast can I get operation research help?
Short questions can often be answered the same day, depending on tutor availability. Longer assignments, case studies or Solver projects depend on their size and your deadline, which you give when you ask for a quote. Asking early leaves time to discuss the model and the interpretation.
Is it allowed to get operation research help?
Yes, when it supports your learning. Tutoring, explanations, feedback and practice on similar problems are generally allowed. Submitting work written by someone else is not. Check your university's academic integrity policy, and use the tutor's guidance to build and write up your own models.
Is my operation research work kept confidential?
Yes. Your files, data and personal details are kept private and shared only with the tutor working on your request. We do not publish your work or contact your university, and you can ask for your files to be deleted once your request is complete.
