What is IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL?

In short: this course gives one-to-one online tutoring for IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL. A verified maths tutor teaches statistics, modelling, calculus and technology use, Paper 3 problem solving and the maths exploration, using IB-style questions.

IB Diploma Programme Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) Higher Level is the IB maths course focused on modelling, statistics and using technology to solve real-world problems, at the depth needed for subjects such as economics, social sciences and some sciences. It is graded 1 to 7 and assessed by three papers and an internal exploration.

This course covers the full AI HL syllabus one to one with a verified IB maths tutor.

Official specification: IB Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation subject brief.

For wider support, see our maths tutoring page, or compare the IB Maths Analysis and Approaches SL course if you are still choosing a route.

How is IB Maths AI HL assessed?

IB Maths AI HL (first assessed in 2021) has three papers and an internal assessment. Technology is allowed on all papers.

ComponentFormatHL timeHL weighting
Paper 1Short-response questions2 hours30%
Paper 2Extended-response questions2 hours30%
Paper 3Two problem-solving questions (HL only)1 hour20%
Internal assessmentMathematical exploration, about 15 hours—20%

At SL, Papers 1 and 2 are each 1 hour 30 minutes and 40%. A new maths course starts with first teaching in August 2027 and first assessment in May 2029.

What is IB Maths AI HL equivalent to?

IB Maths AI HL is broadly comparable in level to A-Level Mathematics, with a stronger focus on statistics, modelling and technology. Universities treat it differently: many accept it for social sciences, biology and business, while some engineering, physics and mathematics courses prefer Analysis and Approaches HL. Always check your target course requirements.

Which topics does AI HL cover?

TopicKey content
1 Number and algebraFinancial maths, complex numbers, matrices
2 FunctionsModelling with linear, exponential, logistic and trigonometric functions
3 Geometry and trigonometryVoronoi diagrams, vectors, graph theory
4 Statistics and probabilityHypothesis testing, chi-squared, regression, distributions, Markov chains
5 CalculusDifferentiation, integration, differential equations and slope fields

How to approach Paper 3

Paper 3 sets two long, structured problems that build an investigation step by step, often in an unfamiliar context. Tutors practise reading the context carefully, following each part's lead and using your calculator efficiently to model, test and interpret results.

What does a worked AI HL question look like?

Here is a typical modelling question: a population grows from 2,000 by 5% a year. Model it and find the population after 10 years.

StepWorking
ModelP(t) = 2,000 × 1.05ᵗ
Substitute t = 102,000 × 1.05¹⁰
Calculate2,000 × 1.6289 ≈ 3,258
InterpretAbout 3,260 individuals, if growth stays constant

Where do students lose marks in IB Maths AI?

Students most often lose marks by giving answers without interpreting them in context, using the GDC without showing setup, wrong accuracy, weak Paper 3 reasoning and explorations without personal engagement.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
No interpretationState what the answer means in context
GDC steps not shownWrite the equation or function you entered
Wrong accuracyGive 3 significant figures unless told otherwise
Weak Paper 3 reasoningExplain each step of the investigation
Exploration lacks engagementChoose a topic you genuinely care about

Support with the maths exploration

The exploration is a written report on a mathematical topic you choose, often a real-world modelling or statistics project. Tutors help you choose a workable topic and data, understand the assessment criteria and sharpen your analysis. Feedback is given within the IB's academic integrity rules; the work you submit is your own.

How the lessons work

Lessons are live and one to one on video with a shared whiteboard. Your tutor uses IB past papers and markschemes. See also IB Maths Analysis and Approaches SL, IB Economics HL and our Business Statistics subject page.

IB Maths AI HL: Applications and Interpretation: frequently asked questions

How many papers are in IB Maths AI HL?

Three: Paper 1 (30%), Paper 2 (30%) and Paper 3 (20%), plus the exploration (20%).

Is a calculator allowed in AI HL?

Yes. A graphic display calculator is required for all papers.

What is Paper 3 in IB Maths AI HL?

Two problem-solving questions in 1 hour, worth 20%.

Who should take AI HL?

Students who want strong applied maths and statistics, for example for economics, business, psychology or some sciences. Check university requirements first.

What is the difference between AI and AA?

AI focuses on modelling and statistics with technology; AA focuses on algebra, calculus and proof.

How is AI HL graded?

On a scale of 1 to 7.

Can a tutor write my exploration?

No. Tutors give feedback and guidance; the exploration must be your own work.

Do you use IB past papers?

Yes. Tutors use IB past papers and markschemes.

How much does an IB Maths tutor cost?

The price depends on the tutor and session length. You see the hourly rate before booking, with no subscription.

Can I study online from any country?

Yes. Lessons are online and scheduled around your time zone.

What percentage do you need for a 7 in IB Maths AI HL?

There is no fixed percentage. The IB sets grade boundaries after each exam session, and they change with paper difficulty, so the mark needed for a 7 varies from session to session. Use recent published boundaries only as a guide. Your tutor marks full past papers and tracks your likely grade against them.

How long is AI HL Paper 3?

1 hour, with two problem-solving questions, worth 20%.

Is IB Maths AI HL hard?

AI HL covers a lot of statistics, modelling and calculus, and Paper 3 asks you to work through longer, unfamiliar problems using technology. It suits students who like applied maths and data. Regular past-paper practice, confident use of your graphing calculator and a well-planned exploration make a high grade realistic.

How long should the maths exploration take?

About 15 hours of work, and it is worth 20%.

What are the IB Maths assessment objectives?

Knowledge and understanding, problem solving, communication and interpretation, technology, reasoning and inquiry approaches.

Is the IB maths course changing?

Yes. A new course starts with first teaching in August 2027 and first assessment in May 2029.

How do I model exponential growth?

Use P(t) = P₀ × (1 + r)ᵗ, where r is the growth rate per period.

Can you help with the IB maths exploration?

Tutors explain the criteria and give feedback on your topic and drafts, while the exploration stays your own.

Do you offer lessons in my time zone?

Yes. Lessons are online, so you can book times that suit your time zone.

Do I need a graphic calculator for IB Maths AI HL?

Yes. A graphic display calculator is expected across the IB Maths AI HL papers, so it is worth learning it early. Your tutor shows you when to use it for statistics, modelling and calculus, and how to write down enough working to earn method marks.

Can I get an IB Maths AI HL tutor online?

Yes. You can learn with a 1-to-1 IB Maths AI HL tutor online through live video lessons from any country. Your tutor explains each topic, builds your calculator skills, practises Paper 3 extended questions and gives feedback on your exploration while the work remains your own.
