How is IB Economics HL assessed?

IB Economics (first assessed in 2022) is assessed by three papers at HL plus an internal assessment portfolio.

ComponentFormatTimeHL weightingSL weighting
Paper 1Extended response1 hour 15 minutes20%30%
Paper 2Data response1 hour 45 minutes30%40%
Paper 3Policy paper (HL only)1 hour 45 minutes30%—
Internal assessmentPortfolio of three commentaries on different units (not the introductory unit), about 20 hours—20%30%

Is IB Economics HL difficult?

IB Economics HL is demanding because it combines diagrams, real-world evaluation and calculations, and HL adds the Paper 3 policy paper with quantitative questions. It is very manageable for students who learn diagrams precisely and practise timed essays. Regular past-paper practice with feedback on evaluation makes the biggest difference.

Which units does IB Economics cover?

UnitKey content
1 Introduction to economicsWhat economics is, how economists approach the world
2 MicroeconomicsDemand and supply, elasticities, government intervention, market failure, behavioural economics, market power (HL)
3 MacroeconomicsMeasuring the economy, aggregate demand and supply, macro objectives, fiscal, monetary and supply-side policy
4 The global economyTrade, exchange rates, the balance of payments, economic integration, development

How do you write a Paper 1 essay?

Paper 1 part (b) asks you to evaluate using a real-world example.

  1. Define the key terms.
  2. Draw and explain an accurate, labelled diagram.
  3. Apply a specific real-world example.
  4. Evaluate: short and long run, stakeholders, priorities and assumptions.
  5. Reach a justified conclusion.

What does a worked IB Economics calculation look like?

Here is a typical HL calculation: a good's price rises from $2.00 to $2.20 and quantity demanded falls from 1,000 to 850 units. Calculate PED and the change in total revenue.

StepWorking
% change in price+10%
% change in quantity−15%
PED−15 ÷ 10 = −1.5 (elastic)
Revenue before and after$2,000 → $1,870
ConclusionRevenue falls because demand is price elastic

Where do students lose marks in IB Economics?

Students most often lose marks with unlabelled diagrams, theory without real-world examples, no evaluation, Paper 2 answers that ignore the text, and IA commentaries that drift from the key concept.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Unlabelled diagramsLabel axes, curves and changes fully
No real-world examplesUse specific, recent examples
No evaluationWeigh stakeholders, short vs long run and assumptions
Text ignored in Paper 2Quote the data and extract
IA off-topicLink every point to the chosen key concept

Support with the IA commentaries

The IA is a portfolio of three commentaries of up to 800 words each on recent news articles, each linked to a different unit and key concept. Tutors help you choose suitable articles, apply diagrams and theory, and evaluate. Feedback is given within the IB's academic integrity rules; the commentaries you submit are your own.
