How do you answer IGCSE Economics evaluation questions?

Evaluation questions ask you to weigh up both sides and reach a justified conclusion. A strong answer explains the argument for, the argument against, then a judgement that says what the outcome depends on, such as the price elasticity of demand or the size of the policy change.

  1. Define the key term.
  2. Explain the chain of reasoning step by step.
  3. Use a labelled diagram where relevant.
  4. Give the counter-argument.
  5. Conclude with what the outcome depends on.

Drawing economics diagrams correctly

Diagrams earn marks when they are accurate and fully labelled. Tutors drill the diagrams that appear most often: production possibility curves, demand and supply shifts, price elasticity, and the effects of taxes and subsidies on a market.

What does a worked IGCSE Economics calculation look like?

Here is a typical question: a price rises from $2.00 to $2.20 and quantity demanded falls from 1,000 to 850 units. Calculate PED.

StepWorking
% change in price+10%
% change in quantity−15%
PED−15 ÷ 10 = −1.5 (elastic)
