How do you score highly in directed writing?
In Paper 2 Section A you use, develop and evaluate ideas from one or two texts to write a speech, letter or article of about 250 to 350 words.
- Identify the form, audience and purpose.
- Select the key ideas from the text(s).
- Evaluate them, don't just repeat them.
- Organise a clear argument with a strong opening and conclusion.
- Use a suitable register and accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.
Descriptive and narrative composition
Section B offers four titles, two descriptive and two narrative, and you write about 350 to 450 words. Tutors teach you to plan quickly, build atmosphere with precise sensory detail in descriptive writing, shape a clear structure in narrative writing, and vary sentences for effect.
What does a strong summary answer look like?
Here is an illustrative method for a summary question: read the task, select the relevant points, then write them concisely in your own words.
| Step | What to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Underline the focus of the question |
| 2 | Select only the points that answer it |
| 3 | Group similar points together |
| 4 | Write in your own words, in continuous prose |
| 5 | Check you have stayed within the word guidance |
