How does data analysis support work?

  1. Share your research questions and data: variables, sample size, software and any supervisor comments.
  2. Plan the analysis: match each research question or hypothesis to a method.
  3. Prepare the data: coding, cleaning, missing values and outliers.
  4. Run and check: you run the analysis with the tutor, checking assumptions at each step.
  5. Interpret and report: write the results in words, tables and figures, and practise explaining them.

Which statistical test should you use?

Choose the test from your research question, the type of outcome and how many groups you compare.

Research questionOutcomeGroupsUsual test (non-parametric alternative)
Do two groups differ?Continuous2 independentIndependent t-test (Mann–Whitney U)
Did the same people change?Continuous2 relatedPaired t-test (Wilcoxon signed-rank)
Do three or more groups differ?Continuous3+One-way ANOVA (Kruskal–Wallis)
Are two categorical variables related?CategoriesCountsChi-square test (Fisher's exact)
Are two variables related?Continuous1 samplePearson correlation (Spearman)
What predicts an outcome?Continuous or binary1 sampleLinear or logistic regression

Worked example: running and reporting a t-test

A fictional dissertation compares exam scores of 30 students taught with flipped learning and 30 taught with lectures.

StepWorkingResult
DescriptivesFlipped: M = 72.4, SD = 8.1; Lecture: M = 66.8, SD = 9.0Difference of 5.6 points
Check assumptionsNormality (Shapiro–Wilk) and equal variances (Levene's test)Both acceptable in this example
Pooled standard deviation√[((29 × 8.1²) + (29 × 9.0²)) ÷ 58]8.56
t statistic5.6 ÷ (8.56 × √(1/30 + 1/30))t(58) = 2.53
p-value and effect sizeTwo-tailed p; Cohen's d = 5.6 ÷ 8.56p = .014, d = 0.65

APA-style sentence: Students in the flipped-learning group scored higher (M = 72.4, SD = 8.1) than those in the lecture group (M = 66.8, SD = 9.0), t(58) = 2.53, p = .014, d = 0.65, a medium-to-large effect.

The sentence gives the direction, the descriptives, the test statistic with degrees of freedom, the p-value and the effect size, which is what most marking schemes ask for.

StepExample
FamiliariseRead all transcripts and note first impressions
Initial codes"felt ignored by staff", "mentor explained everything", "no time to ask questions"
Group codesCodes about mentors and staff attitudes grouped together
Candidate theme"The mentor makes or breaks the placement"
Review and defineCheck the theme against all transcripts and write a one-sentence definition
ReportPresent the theme with two or three short quotes and link it to the literature

Tutors explain approaches such as Braun and Clarke's reflexive thematic analysis and how to show rigour in your methodology chapter.

Where do students lose marks in data analysis?

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Choosing a test without checking assumptionsTest normality, variance and independence, or use a non-parametric test
Reporting p-values without effect sizesAdd effect sizes and confidence intervals
Copying SPSS output tables into the resultsBuild clean APA-style tables with only what matters
Interpreting results in the results chapterDescribe in results, interpret in the discussion
Ignoring missing dataReport how much was missing and how it was handled
Themes that are just topicsDefine each theme as a pattern of meaning with evidence

How much does data analysis support cost, and how is it used responsibly?

The price depends on the size of the dataset, the methods, the software and your deadline. You see the price before you start, with no long contract.

Tutors explain methods and guide you while you run and interpret your own analysis. Your data, conclusions and written results stay your own, in line with your university's academic integrity rules.

How do you report common tests in APA style?

Most dissertation marks in the results chapter are lost on reporting, not on running the test. APA 7 style reports the test statistic, degrees of freedom, exact p value and an effect size, in that order. The examples below use illustrative numbers that are internally consistent, so you can check your own write-up against the pattern.

TestWhat to reportExample sentence (illustrative)
Independent t-testt, df, p, Cohen's dGroup A scored higher than Group B, t(58) = 2.41, p = .019, d = 0.62.
One-way ANOVAF, both df, p, eta squaredScores differed across the three groups, F(2, 87) = 4.12, p = .020, η² = .09.
Chi-square test of independenceχ², df, N, p, Cramér's VPreference was related to year of study, χ²(2, N = 150) = 7.85, p = .020, V = .23.
Pearson correlationr, df, pStudy hours correlated with exam score, r(98) = .34, p < .001.
Multiple regressionR², F, both df, p, then each predictor's b and pThe model explained 21% of the variance, R² = .21, F(3, 116) = 10.28, p < .001.

In SPSS, the values come from the main output table for each test; effect sizes such as Cohen's d and eta squared are reported in recent versions or calculated by hand. A tutor can check that each number in your text matches your output and that the wording answers your research question.
