About this service

More about turnitin similarity & ai report help

FLN Tutors helps students understand Turnitin similarity reports and AI writing indicators, find out why passages match, and learn to quote, paraphrase, summarise and cite sources correctly. Tutors explain your report with you and give feedback while you revise your own work in your own voice. We never try to bypass or beat plagiarism or AI detectors and never promise a particular score; the aim is honest, well-referenced work that follows your institution's academic integrity rules.

What is similarity report help?

In short: similarity report help is one-to-one support from an academic tutor who explains your Turnitin similarity report or AI writing indicator, shows why passages match, and teaches you to quote, paraphrase and cite properly. You then revise your own work in your own voice. We never try to bypass detectors or promise a score.

  • Line-by-line explanation of matched passages
  • Citation, quotation and reference-list fixes
  • Paraphrasing and summarising practice using your own sources
  • Advice on showing your writing process

What does a Turnitin similarity score mean?

A Turnitin similarity score is the percentage of your text that matches sources in Turnitin's databases. It is not a plagiarism verdict: correctly quoted and cited text, reference lists and common phrases can all match. Markers look at what matched and why, not just the number, and settings such as excluding quotes or the bibliography are chosen by your institution.

What matchedUsually a problem? What it means
Quotation in quotation marks with a citationNoCorrect use of a source
Reference list entriesNoReferences look the same for everyone
Common phrases and technical termsRarelyShort, unavoidable matches
Long passages without quotation marksYesNeeds quoting or a genuine paraphrase, with a citation
Close paraphrase with a few words changedYesPatchwriting, which still counts as copying
Your own earlier workIt dependsPossible self-plagiarism; check your rules

Why do passages match, and how do you fix them?

Most matches come from missing quotation marks, missing citations, paraphrases that stay too close to the original, or reused text from earlier work. Each has a clear fix that you make yourself, and fixing it properly also improves your writing.

CauseExampleWhat to do
Missing quotation marksA sentence copied with a citation but no quotation marksAdd quotation marks, or paraphrase genuinely
Missing citationAn idea from a source with no referenceAdd an in-text citation and a reference
PatchwritingSwapping a few words in a copied sentenceRewrite from your understanding, then cite
Too much quotationLong quotes in place of your own analysisQuote less and explain more
Reused earlier workParagraphs from your previous assignmentCheck your rules; cite or rewrite
Template or brief wordingCopying the assignment questionRephrase or remove it

How do you paraphrase properly? A worked example

A good paraphrase restates a source's idea in your own words and sentence structure, then cites it. Changing a few words is not enough. Here is an illustrative example using an invented source, Smith (2020).

VersionTextVerdict
Original (Smith, 2020)"Regular sleep improves students' ability to remember new information."Source text
PatchwritingRegular sleep boosts students' ability to recall new information (Smith, 2020).Too close: same structure, a few words swapped
Good paraphraseStudents who keep a consistent sleep routine tend to retain what they learn more effectively (Smith, 2020).New wording and structure, idea credited
QuotationSmith (2020) argues that "regular sleep improves students' ability to remember new information".Exact words, in quotation marks, cited

Should you quote, paraphrase or summarise?

Quote when the exact wording matters, paraphrase when you need one idea in detail, and summarise when you need the main point of a longer source. All three need a citation, and most strong academic writing relies more on paraphrase and summary than on quotation.

TechniqueWhen to use itCitation needed?
QuoteDefinitions, key phrases, legal or literary wordingYes, with quotation marks and page number where required
ParaphraseA specific idea or finding, in your own wordsYes
SummariseThe main argument of a whole source or sectionYes

Style guides: APA Style, MLA Style Center and OSCOLA.

What about AI writing indicators?

AI writing indicators, such as the one Turnitin offers to institutions, estimate whether text may have been generated by AI. They are estimates, not proof, and can produce false positives. The best protection is a clear record of your own process. Tutors help you understand your university's AI policy and write in your own voice; we never use "humaniser" tools or edit text to evade detection.

  • Keep drafts, notes and version history while you write
  • Follow your institution's rules on AI tools, and declare use where required
  • Ask your tutor or marker how the indicator is used in your module

What we will and won't do

Our approach is integrity-led: tutors help you understand and fix problems yourself, within your institution's rules. These limits protect you as well as your work.

We willWe won't
Explain your similarity report line by linePromise a particular similarity or AI score
Show you how to quote, paraphrase and citeRewrite your work to lower a score
Check citations against your reference listUse tools to bypass plagiarism or AI detectors
Give feedback while you revise in your own wordsSubmit work or contact your university for you
Explain your institution's academic integrity policyAdd sources you have not read

What should you do if you're accused of plagiarism or AI use?

Stay calm, read your institution's academic misconduct policy, and gather evidence of your own process, such as drafts, notes, version history and sources. Attend any meeting prepared to explain how you wrote the work, and ask your students' union or advice service for support. This is general guidance; procedures vary by institution.

  1. Read the allegation and your institution's policy carefully.
  2. Collect drafts, notes, version history and reading records.
  3. Be ready to explain your sources and how you built your argument.
  4. Ask your students' union or advice centre for independent support.
  5. Learn from feedback so future work is properly referenced.

For the sector view, see the QAA's guidance on academic integrity.

Studying outside the UK?

Plagiarism and AI rules exist everywhere, but the software, terminology and procedures differ. FLN tutors help students worldwide understand their own institution's rules and report.

How does similarity report help work, and what does it cost?

Share your similarity report or AI indicator, your draft and your referencing style, and a tutor explains the matches with you and shows how to fix each one. The price depends on document length and turnaround, and you see a fixed quote before you pay.

  1. Share: upload the report, your draft and the assignment brief.
  2. Explain: your tutor goes through the matches and their causes.
  3. Revise: you rewrite in your own words, with feedback on each section.
  4. Check: citations and the reference list are checked against your style guide.

Also useful: proofreading and editing and essay help.

Worked example: reading a Turnitin similarity report

This fictional report for a 2,500-word business essay shows an overall similarity of 18%. The number alone says little; the breakdown shows what needs fixing.

Source of matchesShare of scoreProblem? What to do
Reference list entries7%NoUsually excluded or ignored by markers
Correctly quoted and cited definitions5%NoKeep quotations short and introduced in your own sentence
Close paraphrase of one textbook paragraph, cited4%YesRewrite the idea in your own words and structure, keep the citation
Common phrases, such as "the purpose of this report is"2%NoNormal; vary wording if it repeats often

Only 4% of the score needed action, and fixing it was about better paraphrasing, not about reaching a lower number. A tutor helps you work through each highlighted match in the same way.

Common similarity mistakes, and how to avoid them

MistakeWhat to do instead
Changing a few words in a copied sentence (patchwriting)Read, close the source and explain the idea from your own understanding
Citing at the end of a paragraph that mixes several sourcesCite each source next to the idea it supports
Long quotations instead of analysisQuote only key phrases and explain them in your own words
Forgetting to cite your own earlier workAsk permission and cite it, or rewrite it as new work
Chasing a target percentageFix the matches that matter: uncited text and close paraphrase
Using paraphrasing or "humaniser" toolsWrite in your own voice; these tools can create new problems and breach university rules

See our proofreading and editing service for referencing checks, or the Harvard referencing guide.

FAQ

Turnitin Similarity & AI Report Help: frequently asked questions

Plagiarism checking identifies text similarities with other sources, while AI detection estimates whether writing may have been generated by AI. Neither result alone establishes academic misconduct. A tutor can explain what each report shows and help you respond calmly and accurately if your marker raises a question about either one.

Turnitin reports can be provided only through authorized access. We can also help you understand an existing Turnitin similarity report. If you already have a report, send the PDF with the highlighted matches and your document, and a tutor explains which matches matter and which are normal, such as quotes and reference lists.

No. Detection tools can produce false positives and inconsistent results, and some matches, such as correctly cited quotations and reference lists, are normal. Our service focuses on proper referencing, genuine paraphrasing and writing in your own voice, not on reaching a particular score.

We support essays, assignments, research papers, dissertations, theses, literature reviews, case studies, and academic reports. Tutors work through the report section by section, explaining which matches matter and how to fix citations, quotations and paraphrasing yourself, in your own words.

We can identify excessive quotations, missing citations, and overly close paraphrasing, then provide guidance for proper attribution and independently written revisions. You make the revisions yourself, so the work stays your own and you learn how to avoid the same problems in future assignments.

Turnaround depends on document length, complexity, and the type of review requested. A delivery estimate is provided before the order is confirmed. Sending the full similarity report, your marking criteria and the referencing style at the start helps the tutor give an accurate estimate.
