What topics does computer graphics cover?

Tutors cover the standard graphics syllabus.

Output primitivesLine drawing (DDA, Bresenham), circle and polygon filling
Transformations2D and 3D translation, rotation, scaling, shearing, homogeneous coordinates
ViewingCamera models, orthographic and perspective projection
ClippingLine clipping (Cohen–Sutherland, Liang–Barsky), polygon clipping

Worked example: Bresenham's line algorithm

Draw a line from (0, 0) to (5, 2). Bresenham chooses at each step whether to move only in x or diagonally, using integer arithmetic.

StepPixel plotted
Start(0, 0)
1(1, 0)
2(2, 1)
3(3, 1)
4(4, 2)
5(5, 2)

The algorithm avoids floating-point maths by tracking an error term, which is why it was so important for early hardware and is still taught today.

Worked example: a 2D rotation with homogeneous coordinates

Rotate the point (2, 0) by 90° anticlockwise about the origin, then translate it by (3, 1).

StepWorkingResult
Rotation matrix for 90°[cos 90° −sin 90°; sin 90° cos 90°] = [0 −1; 1 0]—
Rotate (2, 0)(0 × 2 − 1 × 0, 1 × 2 + 0 × 0)(0, 2)
Translate by (3, 1)(0 + 3, 2 + 1)(3, 3)
Combined matrix (translate × rotate)Using 3 × 3 homogeneous matricesOne matrix applied to every vertex

Order matters: rotating then translating gives (3, 3), but translating then rotating gives (−1, 5).

Worked example: diffuse lighting

An illustrative surface has normal N = (0, 0, 1) and a light direction towards the light L = (0, 0.6, 0.8), both unit vectors. The light intensity is 1.0 and the diffuse coefficient kd = 0.7.

StepWorkingResult
Dot product N · L0 × 0 + 0 × 0.6 + 1 × 0.80.8
Diffuse intensitykd × I × max(N · L, 0) = 0.7 × 1.0 × 0.80.56

If N · L were negative, the surface would face away from the light and the diffuse term would be 0.

Where do students lose marks in computer graphics?

Most lost marks come from matrix order errors and code that renders but is not explained.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Multiplying transformation matrices in the wrong orderWrite the order out and test on one point
Forgetting homogeneous coordinatesUse 3 × 3 matrices in 2D and 4 × 4 in 3D
Unnormalised vectors in lightingNormalise N and L before the dot product

How much does computer graphics help cost?

The price of computer graphics help depends on whether it is theory or code, the size of the project and your deadline. A set of transformation questions costs less than a full OpenGL project. You always see the price first: a fixed quote for homework and assignment guidance, or the tutor's hourly rate for live lessons, with no contract and no minimum number of sessions. Computer Graphics tutoring: frequently asked questions

Can you help with a computer graphics assignment?

Yes. Tutors explain the algorithms, help you debug your own rendering code and check your analysis, within your university's rules.

How does Bresenham's line algorithm work?

It steps along the major axis one pixel at a time and uses an integer error term to decide whether to also step along the minor axis, avoiding floating-point arithmetic.

Why are homogeneous coordinates used?

They let translation be written as a matrix multiplication, so translations, rotations and scaling can all be combined into a single matrix.

Does the order of transformations matter?

Yes. Matrix multiplication is not commutative, so rotating then translating gives a different result from translating then rotating.

What is the difference between orthographic and perspective projection?

Orthographic projection keeps parallel lines parallel and sizes constant; perspective projection makes distant objects smaller, like a real camera.

How does the z-buffer work?

For each pixel the z-buffer stores the depth of the closest surface drawn so far, and a new fragment is drawn only if it is closer.

What is the Phong lighting model?

It adds ambient, diffuse and specular terms to approximate how light reflects from a surface.

What is the difference between Gouraud and Phong shading?

Gouraud shading calculates lighting at vertices and interpolates colours; Phong shading interpolates normals and calculates lighting per pixel, giving smoother highlights.

What are vertex and fragment shaders?

A vertex shader transforms each vertex; a fragment shader calculates the colour of each pixel fragment. Both run on the GPU.

How does Cohen–Sutherland clipping work?

Each line endpoint gets a 4-bit outcode for its position relative to the window; the codes show whether the line is fully inside, fully outside or needs clipping.

What is a Bézier curve?

A Bézier curve is a smooth curve defined by control points; the curve starts and ends at the first and last points and is pulled towards the others.

Can you help with OpenGL?

Yes. Tutors help with buffers, shaders, transformations, cameras, lighting and textures in OpenGL.

Do you help with WebGL or three.js?

Yes. Tutors help you build browser-based 3D graphics with WebGL or three.js.

Can you help with a ray tracer project?

Yes. Tutors explain ray–object intersections, shading, shadows and reflections and help you debug your renderer.

Why is my OpenGL window black?

Common causes are a shader that failed to compile, no vertex data bound, a camera pointing away from the scene or depth testing set up incorrectly.

Which maths do I need for computer graphics?

Vectors, matrices and basic trigonometry, plus some calculus for curves and lighting.

Do you help BTech students with computer graphics?

Yes. Tutors cover the BTech syllabus, including line and circle algorithms, transformations and clipping.

Can I get computer graphics help the same day?

Often, yes, for short questions, depending on tutor availability.

Is it allowed to get computer graphics help?

Yes. Tutoring, worked examples and feedback are a normal part of learning. You should use the explanations to understand the method and submit your own work in line with your school's or university's academic integrity rules. See our academic integrity policy.

Is my computer graphics work kept confidential?

Yes. Your files and details are used only to help you and are not shared with your school or university. See our privacy policy.
