What is engineering hydrology?

Engineering hydrology is the study of how water moves through the hydrological cycle, applied to designing drainage, flood defences, reservoirs and water supply. It estimates rainfall, runoff, flood peaks and groundwater flows for engineering decisions.

Worked example: peak runoff with the rational method

An illustrative urban catchment of 2 km² has a runoff coefficient C = 0.6. The design rainfall intensity for a duration equal to the time of concentration is 40 mm/h. Find the peak discharge.

StepWorkingResult
Formula (i in mm/h, A in km², Q in m³/s)Q = C i A ÷ 3.6—
Substitute0.6 × 40 × 2 ÷ 3.6≈ 13.33 m³/s

The rational method suits small catchments; state its assumptions, such as uniform rainfall over the catchment for at least the time of concentration.

Worked example: average rainfall and a water balance

Three rain gauges record 20 mm, 30 mm and 25 mm in a storm. Their Thiessen polygon weights are 0.5, 0.3 and 0.2.

QuestionWorkingAnswer
Arithmetic mean rainfall(20 + 30 + 25) ÷ 325 mm
Thiessen-weighted rainfall20 × 0.5 + 30 × 0.3 + 25 × 0.224 mm
Annual water balance: P = 800 mm, ET = 500 mm, runoff = 250 mm. Find the change in storage.ΔS = P − ET − Q = 800 − 500 − 250+50 mm

The Thiessen method gives more weight to gauges that represent larger areas, so it differs from the simple average.

How to derive and use a unit hydrograph

A unit hydrograph is the direct runoff hydrograph from 1 unit (for example 1 cm) of effective rainfall falling uniformly over a catchment in a set duration. Separate baseflow from a recorded storm hydrograph, divide the direct runoff ordinates by the effective rainfall depth, then use superposition to predict runoff from other storms.

Where do students lose marks in hydrology?

Most lost marks come from unit mistakes and methods applied outside their assumptions.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Unit errors in the rational methodUse the version of the formula that matches your units
Using the rational method for large catchmentsState its limits and choose another method when needed
Not separating baseflowSeparate baseflow before deriving a unit hydrograph
Wrong return period interpretationExplain return period as an average recurrence probability
Routing tables with arithmetic slipsCheck storage and outflow at each step
No discussion of uncertaintyDiscuss data quality and assumptions

How much does hydrology help cost?

The price of hydrology help depends on the number of problems, whether data analysis or design is needed and your deadline. A short rational method question costs less than a full flood routing assignment. You always see the price first: a fixed quote for homework and assignment guidance, or the tutor's hourly rate for live lessons, with no contract and no minimum number of sessions. Refunds follow our refund policy.

Hydrology tutoring: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between infiltration capacity and infiltration rate?

Infiltration capacity is the maximum rate at which a soil can absorb water under given conditions, and it usually falls during a storm as the soil wets. The actual infiltration rate equals the rainfall intensity when rain is lighter than the capacity, and equals the capacity when rain is heavier, with the excess becoming runoff.

What is the rational method?

The rational method estimates peak runoff from a small catchment as Q = CiA (with a unit conversion factor), using a runoff coefficient, rainfall intensity and catchment area.

What is a unit hydrograph?

A unit hydrograph is the direct runoff from one unit of effective rainfall over a catchment in a given duration, used to predict runoff from other storms.

How is average catchment rainfall calculated?

Common methods are the arithmetic mean, the Thiessen polygon method and the isohyetal method, which give increasing weight to spatial variation.

What is a return period?

A return period is the average time between events of a given size. A 100-year flood has a 1% chance of being equalled or exceeded in any year.

What is the time of concentration?

It is the time for runoff to travel from the most distant point of a catchment to the outlet.

How does flood routing work?

Flood routing tracks how a flood wave changes as it passes through a reservoir or river reach, using storage–outflow relationships such as the Muskingum method.

What is Darcy's law?

Darcy's law states that groundwater flow rate is proportional to the hydraulic gradient: Q = −KA(dh ÷ dl), where K is hydraulic conductivity.

What is the φ-index?

The φ-index is a constant loss rate such that rainfall above it equals the observed runoff volume.

What is baseflow?

Baseflow is the part of streamflow supplied by groundwater, which must be separated from direct runoff in hydrograph analysis.

How do I do a flood frequency analysis?

Rank annual maximum flows, fit a distribution such as Gumbel, and estimate the flow for the return period you need.

Can you help with HEC-HMS or HEC-RAS?

Yes. Tutors explain the hydrology behind model inputs and how to interpret the outputs.

What is the difference between a confined and an unconfined aquifer?

An unconfined aquifer has the water table as its upper boundary and is recharged directly from the surface. A confined aquifer lies between impermeable layers and holds water under pressure, so water in a well rises above the top of the aquifer, sometimes flowing freely as an artesian well. They are analysed with different well equations.

Do you help with GATE hydrology questions?

Yes. Tutors help BTech students with GATE-style hydrology questions.

Which hydrology textbooks do tutors use?

Tutors work from your course text, for example Subramanya's Engineering Hydrology or Chow, Maidment and Mays, and your notes.

What is evapotranspiration?

Evapotranspiration is the combined loss of water by evaporation from surfaces and transpiration from plants.

Can a tutor help with a drainage design assignment?

Yes. Tutors help you estimate design flows and size drainage elements with justified calculations.

Can I get hydrology help the same day?

Often, yes, for short problem sets, depending on tutor availability.

Is it allowed to get hydrology help?

Yes. Tutoring, worked examples and feedback are a normal part of learning. You should use the explanations to understand the method and submit your own work in line with your school's or university's academic integrity rules. See our academic integrity policy.

Is my hydrology work kept confidential?

Yes. Your files and details are used only to help you and are not shared with your school or university. See our privacy policy.

What is the S-curve hydrograph used for?

An S-curve hydrograph is the runoff from continuous effective rainfall of one centimetre per unit duration, built by summing lagged unit hydrographs. It is used to convert a unit hydrograph of one duration into another, by offsetting two S-curves by the new duration, subtracting them and scaling the result.
