How do you write strong geography case studies?

Case study answers earn the top level when they are specific to a named place. Learn two or three precise facts for each case study, such as figures, places and dates, then link them to the question.

  1. Name the place and its location.
  2. Give specific facts and figures.
  3. Explain causes and effects.
  4. Evaluate management or responses.
  5. Link back to the question.

Geographical skills and fieldwork

Tutors practise the skills that carry a large share of marks: reading topographic maps, grid references, scale and distance, interpreting graphs, photographs and data, and planning a fieldwork investigation with a hypothesis, methods, results and evaluation, as tested in Paper 4.

What does a worked geography skills question look like?

Here is a typical data question: a town's population grew from 40,000 to 52,000. Calculate the percentage increase.

StepWorking
Increase52,000 − 40,000 = 12,000
Divide by original12,000 ÷ 40,000 = 0.30

IGCSE Geography 0460: Cambridge (CIE): frequently asked questions

What is the Cambridge IGCSE Geography code?

The syllabus code is 0460.

Is IGCSE Geography changing?

Yes. From 2027, Paper 1 becomes Physical Geography and Paper 2 becomes Human Geography, with ten topics replacing the three themes.

How many papers are in IGCSE Geography?

Three components: two written papers plus either coursework or a written alternative.

Is IGCSE Geography tiered?

No. Everyone sits the same papers and can achieve grades A* to G.

How many case studies do I need?

Enough to cover each topic with at least one detailed, named example. Your tutor helps you build a case study bank.

How do I get an A* in IGCSE Geography?

Use detailed case studies, master map and data skills, and practise extended answers with mark schemes.

Do you use Cambridge past papers?

Yes. Tutors use Cambridge past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports.

How much does an IGCSE Geography tutor cost?

The price depends on the tutor and session length. You see the hourly rate before booking, with no subscription.

Can I study online from any country?

Yes. Lessons are online and scheduled around your time zone.

How hard is IGCSE Geography?

IGCSE Geography is manageable for most students who learn case studies well and practise map and data skills. Marks are usually lost on vague case study detail, misreading resources and weak extended answers rather than on difficult content. Regular past-paper practice and clear case study notes make the biggest difference to your grade.

What is Paper 4?

Geographical Investigations: 1 hour 30 minutes, two compulsory questions, an alternative to coursework.

How long is the coursework?

A fieldwork report of 1,800 to 2,200 words, worth 28%.

What are the physical topics?

Rivers, coasts, ecosystems, tectonic hazards and climate change.

What are the human topics?

Populations, towns and cities, development, economies and resource provision.

How do I write a case study answer?

Name the place, give specific facts and link them to the question.

When are the exams?

June and November, with a March series for centres in India only.

Where can I find the IGCSE Geography 0460 syllabus?

Cambridge International publishes the 0460 syllabus on its website, with separate documents for different exam years. Use the one for your exam year, because it lists the themes, skills and papers. Your tutor plans lessons from it and helps private candidates organise the whole course.

Where can I find IGCSE Geography 0460 past papers?

Cambridge International provides past papers and mark schemes through its website and School Support Hub, and your school can share them with you. Check which syllabus year you are entered for, because the papers change for 2027. Your tutor sets questions by theme, then full timed papers.

What percentage do I need for an A* in IGCSE Geography?

There is no fixed percentage: Cambridge publishes grade thresholds after each exam series, and they change with paper difficulty and the options taken. Check the thresholds for your series to convert raw marks into grades. Your tutor marks past papers and compares your total with recent thresholds to estimate your likely grade.

Do you offer lessons in my time zone?

Yes. Lessons are online, so you can book times that suit your time zone.

Is there an IGCSE Geography online course for private candidates?

Yes. This IGCSE Geography online course suits private candidates, because lessons are live, 1-to-1 and built around your own exam date. Your tutor plans the themes, case studies and skills practice. You still need to enter through an exam centre, so check the arrangements with your chosen centre early.
