What is physiology?

Physiology is the study of how living organisms work: how cells, tissues, organs and systems function and are controlled to keep the body stable. Human physiology is a core subject in biomedical science, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy and sports science.

  • Cell physiology: membranes, transport and membrane potentials
  • Excitable tissues: nerves, synapses and muscle
  • Body systems: cardiovascular, respiratory, renal, digestive, endocrine and reproductive
  • Control: homeostasis, feedback loops and integration between systems
  • Applied physiology: exercise, environment and the basis of disease

Worked example: cardiac output and mean arterial pressure

Two calculations that come up in cardiovascular physiology. Illustrative resting values only.

QuestionWorkingAnswer
Heart rate 70 beats/min, stroke volume 70 mL. Find cardiac output.CO = HR × SV = 70 × 70 mL/min4,900 mL/min ≈ 4.9 L/min
Blood pressure 120/80 mmHg. Estimate mean arterial pressure.MAP ≈ DBP + ⅓(SBP − DBP) = 80 + ⅓ × 40≈ 93 mmHg
Why not simply average 120 and 80?The heart spends longer in diastole than systole at restSo MAP is closer to the diastolic pressure

Worked example: ventilation and renal clearance

Two more standard calculations. Illustrative values only.

QuestionWorkingAnswer
Tidal volume 500 mL, 12 breaths/min. Find minute ventilation.500 mL × 126.0 L/min
Anatomical dead space 150 mL. Find alveolar ventilation.(500 − 150) mL × 124.2 L/min
Inulin: urine 30 mg/mL, urine flow 1 mL/min, plasma 0.25 mg/mL. Find GFR.Clearance C = (U × V) ÷ P = (30 × 1) ÷ 0.25120 mL/min

Inulin is filtered but neither reabsorbed nor secreted, which is why its clearance measures GFR.

Worked example: the potassium equilibrium potential

Use the Nernst equation at body temperature (37 °C), where E = 61.5 × log₁₀([ion]outside ÷ [ion]inside) mV for a monovalent cation. Illustrative concentrations: K⁺ outside 5 mM, inside 140 mM.

StepWorking
Ratio5 ÷ 140 ≈ 0.0357
Logarithmlog₁₀ 0.0357 ≈ −1.447
Equilibrium potentialE_K ≈ 61.5 × (−1.447) ≈ −89 mV

The resting membrane potential (around −70 mV in many neurons) is close to, but less negative than, E_K, because the membrane is also slightly permeable to Na⁺.

Where do students lose marks in physiology?

Most lost marks in physiology come from vague mechanisms and steps described in the wrong order.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Describing what happens but not whyExplain the mechanism, such as which ion channels open and why
Steps of a process out of orderUse a numbered sequence for processes such as the action potential
Confusing similar termsDistinguish pressure and flow, osmolarity and tonicity, filtration and reabsorption
Calculations without unitsKeep units through every step
Graphs without explanationDescribe the trend, then explain it physiologically
Isolated systems in integration questionsLink the systems involved, such as heart, lungs and kidneys in exercise

What physiology assessments look like, and what markers want

Physiology tutoring: frequently asked questions

Can you help with a physiology lab report?

Yes. Tutors help you structure your own report, calculate and present results correctly and write a discussion linked to physiological mechanisms.

What is homeostasis?

Homeostasis is the maintenance of a stable internal environment, such as body temperature, blood glucose and blood pressure, mainly through negative feedback.

What is the difference between negative and positive feedback?

Negative feedback reverses a change to restore a set point; positive feedback amplifies a change, as in blood clotting and childbirth.

How does an action potential work?

A stimulus opens voltage-gated Na⁺ channels, Na⁺ rushes in and depolarises the membrane; then Na⁺ channels inactivate and K⁺ channels open, repolarising it, followed by a brief hyperpolarisation.

How do I calculate cardiac output?

Cardiac output = heart rate × stroke volume. At rest, 70 beats/min × 70 mL gives about 4.9 L/min.

What happens during the cardiac cycle?

The heart alternates between systole, when the ventricles contract and eject blood, and diastole, when they relax and fill. Valves open and close in response to pressure differences.

What shifts the oxygen dissociation curve to the right?

Higher carbon dioxide, higher temperature, lower pH and more 2,3-BPG shift the curve right, so haemoglobin releases oxygen more easily to active tissues.

What is GFR and how is it measured?

GFR is the volume of plasma filtered by the kidneys per minute, about 120 mL/min in a healthy adult. It is measured by the clearance of a substance such as inulin, or estimated from creatinine.

How does the sliding filament theory work?

Calcium released in the muscle fibre exposes binding sites on actin; myosin heads form cross-bridges, pull the actin filaments and detach using ATP, shortening the sarcomere.

What is the difference between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems?

The sympathetic system prepares the body for action (fight or flight), while the parasympathetic system supports rest and digestion. Most organs receive both.

How are blood glucose levels controlled?

When glucose rises, the pancreas releases insulin, which promotes glucose uptake and storage; when it falls, glucagon promotes glucose release from the liver.

What is the Nernst equation used for?

The Nernst equation calculates the equilibrium potential for a single ion from its concentrations inside and outside the cell.

Can you help with ECG interpretation in physiology?

Yes. Tutors explain the P wave, QRS complex and T wave, intervals, and how to calculate heart rate from an ECG trace.

What is the difference between physiology and anatomy?

Anatomy studies the structure of the body; physiology studies how those structures work and are controlled.

Do you help nursing students with physiology?

Yes. Tutors explain physiology for nursing courses in clear, clinical terms, linked to patient care.

Do you help with exercise physiology?

Yes. Tutors cover energy systems, cardiovascular and respiratory responses to exercise, VO₂ max and training adaptations.

Can you help with a physiology essay?

Yes. Tutors help you plan your argument and find current research, so you write it in your own words.

Can I get physiology help the same day?

Often, yes. Short questions can usually be explained the same day, depending on tutor availability.

Is it allowed to get physiology help?

Yes. Tutoring, worked examples and feedback are a normal part of learning. You should use the explanations to understand the method and submit your own work in line with your school's or university's academic integrity rules. See our academic integrity policy.

Is my physiology work kept confidential?

Yes. Your files and details are used only to help you and are not shared with your school or university. See our privacy policy.
