How does the A* search algorithm work?

A* expands the node with the lowest f(n) = g(n) + h(n), where g(n) is the cost so far and h(n) is a heuristic estimate of the remaining cost. If the heuristic is admissible (it never overestimates), A* finds an optimal path. Tutors help you design heuristics, such as Manhattan distance on a grid, and trace A* by hand.

Worked example: minimax with alpha–beta pruning

A MAX player chooses between two moves. Each leads to a MIN node with two leaves: the left MIN node has leaves 3 and 5; the right MIN node has leaves 2 and 9.

StepReasoningValue
Left MIN nodeMIN chooses min(3, 5)3
Right MIN node, first leafMIN can get 2, which is already less than MAX's 3Right value ≤ 2
Alpha–beta pruningMAX will never choose the right move, so leaf 9 is not evaluatedPruned
Root (MAX)max(3, ≤ 2)3: choose the left move

Pruning gives the same answer as full minimax but checks fewer nodes, especially when good moves are searched first.

Worked example: information gain for a decision tree

The classic weather dataset has 14 days: 9 "play" and 5 "don't play". The attribute outlook splits it into sunny (2 play, 3 don't), overcast (4, 0) and rain (3, 2).

StepWorkingResult
Entropy of the whole set−(9/14) log₂(9/14) − (5/14) log₂(5/14)≈ 0.940
Entropy of sunny and rain−(2/5) log₂(2/5) − (3/5) log₂(3/5)≈ 0.971 each
Entropy of overcastAll one class0
Weighted entropy after the split(5/14)(0.971) + (4/14)(0) + (5/14)(0.971)≈ 0.694
Information gain0.940 − 0.694≈ 0.247

The ID3 algorithm chooses the attribute with the highest information gain as the next split.

AI programming assignments

Most AI modules include programming. Tutors help you implement search algorithms, game-playing agents, constraint solvers, probabilistic models and machine learning pipelines, usually in Python, and explain each part of your code so you can describe it in your report.

AI ethics, reports and dissertations

AI essays and reports increasingly ask about fairness, transparency, accountability, privacy and safety. Tutors help you structure arguments, use current research and apply ethical frameworks to real systems.

Where do students lose marks in AI?

Most lost marks come from algorithm traces with errors and reports that do not evaluate results.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Inadmissible heuristics for A*Check the heuristic never overestimates
Errors in minimax tracesWork bottom-up and mark MAX and MIN levels clearly
Confusing BFS and uniform-cost searchUse uniform-cost search when step costs differ
Reporting accuracy onlyUse suitable metrics and baselines
No discussion of limitations or ethicsDiscuss bias, data and real-world risks
Code you cannot explainUnderstand and document every component

How much does artificial intelligence help cost?

The price of artificial intelligence help depends on whether it is theory or code, the size of the task and your deadline. A set of search traces costs less than a full AI programming project with a report. You always see the price first: a fixed quote for homework and assignment guidance, or the tutor's hourly rate for live lessons, with no contract and no minimum number of sessions. Refunds follow our refund policy.

Artificial Intelligence tutoring: frequently asked questions

Can you help with an artificial intelligence assignment?

Yes. Tutors explain the techniques, help you implement and debug your own code and check your analysis, within your university's rules.

What is the difference between AI and machine learning?

AI is the broad field of building intelligent systems; machine learning is the part of AI in which systems learn patterns from data rather than following hand-written rules.

How does A* search work?

A* expands the node with the lowest g(n) + h(n), the cost so far plus a heuristic estimate of the remaining cost. With an admissible heuristic it finds an optimal path.

What is an admissible heuristic?

An admissible heuristic never overestimates the true cost to the goal, such as straight-line distance on a map.

How does minimax work?

Minimax assumes both players play optimally: MAX chooses the move with the highest value and MIN the lowest, evaluated from the leaves up.

What does alpha–beta pruning do?

Alpha–beta pruning skips branches that cannot change the final minimax decision, giving the same result with fewer nodes evaluated.

What is a constraint satisfaction problem?

A CSP has variables, domains of possible values and constraints between them, such as colouring a map so neighbouring regions differ. It is solved with backtracking and constraint propagation.

What is a Bayesian network?

A Bayesian network is a graph of variables with conditional probability tables, used to reason about uncertainty and compute probabilities from evidence.

How is information gain calculated?

Information gain is the entropy of a dataset minus the weighted entropy after splitting on an attribute. Decision tree algorithms such as ID3 choose the split with the highest gain.

What is reinforcement learning?

Reinforcement learning trains an agent to choose actions that maximise reward through trial and error, using methods such as Q-learning.

Can you help with Python AI projects?

Yes. Tutors help with search agents, game players, classifiers and neural networks in Python, explaining each part of your code.

Do you help with Prolog?

Yes. Tutors explain facts, rules, queries, recursion and backtracking in Prolog.

Can you help with an AI ethics essay?

Yes. Tutors help you plan the argument and find current sources on fairness, accountability, transparency and safety.

Do you help with natural language processing?

Yes. Tutors cover text preprocessing, language models, embeddings and evaluation for NLP assignments.

Which textbook do AI courses use?

Many courses use Russell and Norvig's Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach; tutors work from your own course text and notes.

Is artificial intelligence hard to study?

AI combines programming, probability and some mathematics, so it can be demanding. Tutors break each algorithm into steps you can trace by hand.

Can you help with an AI dissertation?

Yes. Tutors help with the research question, method, experiments and write-up. See dissertation help.

Can I get AI homework help the same day?

Often, yes, for short tracing or theory questions, depending on tutor availability.

Is it allowed to get artificial intelligence help?

Yes. Tutoring, worked examples and feedback are a normal part of learning. You should use the explanations to understand the method and submit your own work in line with your school's or university's academic integrity rules. See our academic integrity policy.

Is my artificial intelligence work kept confidential?

Yes. Your files and details are used only to help you and are not shared with your school or university. See our privacy policy.
