CoefficientsFilm, penetration and surface renewal theories, analogies
Equilibrium stagesStage efficiency, operating lines, Kremser equation
DistillationFlash, batch, continuous distillation, McCabe–Thiele, Fenske–Underwood–Gilliland

Humidification and dryingPsychrometry, cooling towers, drying rate curves

Worked example: diffusion flux and minimum stages

Two standard problems.

QuestionWorkingAnswer
D = 2 × 10⁻⁹ m²/s; concentration falls by 0.5 mol/m³ over 1 mm. Flux?J = D × ΔC ÷ Δx = 2 × 10⁻⁹ × 0.5 ÷ 0.0011 × 10⁻⁶ mol/m²·s
Distillation with xD = 0.95, xB = 0.05 and relative volatility α = 2.5. Minimum stages (Fenske)?Nmin = ln[(0.95/0.05)(0.95/0.05)] ÷ ln 2.5 = ln 361 ÷ 0.916≈ 6.4 theoretical stages (at total reflux)

The Fenske result is the minimum at total reflux; a real column needs more stages at a finite reflux ratio.

Worked example: drying time in the constant-rate period

A wet solid is dried from 0.40 to 0.15 kg water per kg dry solid. The critical moisture content is 0.15, the constant drying rate is 1.2 kg/m²·h and there are 20 kg of dry solid per m² of drying surface.

StepWorkingResult
Moisture removed per kg dry solid0.40 − 0.150.25 kg/kg
Moisture removed per m²20 × 0.255 kg/m²
Drying time5 ÷ 1.2≈ 4.2 hours

Below the critical moisture content, the falling-rate period needs a separate calculation.

Where do students lose marks in mass transfer?

Most lost marks come from unit errors and operating lines drawn wrongly.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Mixing mole fractions and mole ratiosUse one basis consistently
Operating lines with the wrong slopeDerive the slope from the flow rates in each section
Fenske used for real refluxUse Fenske for minimum stages only
Ignoring the q-line in McCabe–ThieleDraw the feed line from the feed condition
Drying time including the falling-rate period wronglyTreat constant and falling rate periods separately
No unitsShow units at every step

Mass Transfer tutoring: frequently asked questions

Can you help with mass transfer?

Yes. Tutors explain concepts and work through problems and design tasks, within your university's rules.

What is mass transfer?

The movement of a component from a region of high concentration to low concentration, within or between phases.

What is Fick's first law?

The diffusive flux is proportional to the concentration gradient: J = −D dC/dx.

What is a mass transfer coefficient?

A coefficient linking the mass transfer rate to the concentration driving force.

What is the two-film theory?

A model where mass transfer resistance lies in thin films on each side of a phase interface.

What is the Fenske equation?

An equation giving the minimum number of stages in distillation at total reflux.

What is the minimum reflux ratio?

The lowest reflux at which the separation is possible, needing infinite stages.

What is the q-line?

A line on a McCabe–Thiele diagram that represents the feed's thermal condition.

What is HTU and NTU?

Height of a transfer unit and number of transfer units, used to size packed columns.

What is the minimum liquid rate in absorption?

The lowest liquid flow at which the operating line touches the equilibrium curve.

What is liquid–liquid extraction?

Separating components by transferring a solute from one liquid to another immiscible liquid.

What is the critical moisture content?

The moisture content at which drying changes from the constant-rate to the falling-rate period.

What is relative humidity versus humidity ratio?

Relative humidity compares vapour pressure with saturation; humidity ratio is mass of water per mass of dry air.

Do you help with GATE mass transfer?

Yes. Tutors use GATE-style problems for practice.

Is mass transfer hard?

Graphical methods take practice; worked examples make them clearer.

Which mass transfer textbook do tutors use?

Tutors work from your course text, such as Treybal or McCabe, Smith and Harriott.

Can I get mass transfer help the same day?

Often, yes, for short problems, depending on tutor availability.

Do you help with distillation column design?

Yes. Tutors help with stages, reflux and column sizing.

Is it allowed to get mass transfer help?

Yes. Tutoring, worked examples and feedback are a normal part of learning. You should use the explanations to understand the method and submit your own work in line with your school's or university's academic integrity rules. See our academic integrity policy.

Is my mass transfer work kept confidential?

Yes. Your files and details are used only to help you and are not shared with your school or university. See our privacy policy.
