What is the difference between accounts and accounting?

In India, "accounts" or "accountancy" usually means the school and college subject: recording transactions and preparing financial statements in set formats. "Accounting" is the wider university and professional field, including financial reporting, management accounting, audit and tax. This page covers accounts and accountancy; for university financial reporting and IFRS, see Accounting.

Worked example: valuing goodwill by the super profit method

Goodwill questions appear in admission and retirement problems, so tutors make sure the method is automatic. Here is an illustrative question: a firm's average profit is ₹1,00,000, its capital employed is ₹8,00,000 and the normal rate of return is 10%. Value goodwill at three years' purchase of super profit.

StepWorking
Normal profit10% × ₹8,00,000 = ₹80,000
Super profitAverage profit − normal profit = ₹1,00,000 − ₹80,000 = ₹20,000
GoodwillSuper profit × number of years' purchase = ₹20,000 × 3 = ₹60,000

By the capitalisation of super profit method, goodwill would be ₹20,000 × 100 ÷ 10 = ₹2,00,000, so always use the method the question names.

Worked example: straight line versus written down value depreciation

Depreciation questions appear in Class 11, A-Level and first-year accounting. A machine costs ₹1,00,000 and has a residual value of ₹10,000 after 5 years. Compare the first three years under the straight line method (SLM) and the written down value method (WDV) at 20%.

YearSLM chargeWDV charge (20% of opening value)WDV closing value
1(1,00,000 − 10,000) ÷ 5 = ₹18,00020% × 1,00,000 = ₹20,000₹80,000
2₹18,00020% × 80,000 = ₹16,000₹64,000
3₹18,00020% × 64,000 = ₹12,800₹51,200

SLM gives the same charge each year; WDV charges more in early years and less later. Use the method and rate the question gives, and show the working as a note.

How do you prepare final accounts with adjustments?

Final accounts questions carry high marks and many adjustments, such as closing stock, outstanding and prepaid expenses, accrued income, depreciation, bad debts and provisions. Tutors teach a method that keeps every adjustment in the right place.

  1. Tick each trial balance item as you use it, so nothing is missed.
  2. Prepare the trading account to find gross profit.
  3. Prepare the profit and loss account to find net profit.
  4. Prepare the balance sheet with assets and liabilities grouped and marshalled.
  5. Treat each adjustment twice: once in the trading or profit and loss account and once in the balance sheet.
  6. Check that the balance sheet balances, and trace any difference.

Where do students lose marks in accounts?

Most lost marks in accounts come from format and treatment, not arithmetic. Tutors check your working against a list like this one.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Missing narrations in journal entriesWrite a short narration under every entry
Treating an adjustment only onceEvery adjustment has two effects: show both
Wrong side of the cash book or ledgerUse the rules of debit and credit for each account type
Goodwill treated with the wrong ratioUse the sacrificing ratio on admission and the gaining ratio on retirement
Interest on a partner's loan in the appropriation accountIt is a charge against profit, so it goes in the profit and loss account
Not showing working notesGive working notes for every calculated figure

What accounts assessments look like, and what markers want
