IFRS or UK GAAP (FRS 102): which applies?

Which framework applies depends on the entity: UK listed groups prepare consolidated accounts under UK-adopted IFRS, most UK private companies use FRS 102, and the smallest micro-entities may use FRS 105. Under the Companies Act 2006, companies must prepare annual accounts and file them at Companies House. Your brief or exam will state which framework to use.

FrameworkTypically used by
UK-adopted IFRSListed groups' consolidated accounts and some other entities
FRS 102 (UK GAAP)Most UK private companies
FRS 105Micro-entities choosing the micro-entities regime

The terminology differs too: FRS 102 accounts often use 'profit and loss account' and 'balance sheet', while IFRS uses 'statement of profit or loss' and 'statement of financial position'. Use one set consistently.

Official sources: the IFRS Foundation for IFRS standards, the Financial Reporting Council for FRS 102 and FRS 105, and Companies House for filing requirements.

Which accounting standards come up most in assignments?

The standards most often tested are the Conceptual Framework and IAS 1, 2, 7, 8, 12, 16, 36, 37 and 38, together with IFRS 3, 9, 10, 15 and 16. Citing the standard that supports each accounting treatment, and applying its rules step by step, is what turns a calculation into a well-supported answer.

Auditing, taxation and financial analysis

Beyond the core, tutors support auditing (risk, internal controls, evidence and audit reports), taxation (income tax, corporation tax and VAT principles for your jurisdiction) and financial analysis (ratio analysis, interpreting accounts and investment appraisal with NPV and IRR).

For UK tax work, note that VAT records and returns now fall under HMRC's Making Tax Digital rules, and tax rates and allowances change each tax year, so always use the year your brief specifies.

How accounting solutions are set out

Clear workings earn method marks even when a final figure is wrong. Every solution from our tutors follows a consistent layout you can copy in exams: a labelled proforma, numbered workings cross-referenced to the answer, figures in a consistent unit, and a short explanation of any judgement, such as a treatment under an accounting standard.

  1. The question requirement restated
  2. Workings in numbered, labelled steps
  3. The final statement or answer in the correct format
  4. A short explanation of key treatments and assumptions

Worked example: goodwill on consolidation

An illustrative IFRS 3 question: a parent pays 500,000 for 80% of a subsidiary. Non-controlling interest (NCI) is measured at its fair value of 120,000, and the fair value of the subsidiary's identifiable net assets at acquisition is 520,000.

StepWorkingResult
Consideration transferredGiven500,000
Add NCI at fair valueGiven120,000
Less fair value of net assets acquiredGiven(520,000)
Goodwill500,000 + 120,000 − 520,000100,000

If NCI were measured at its proportionate share of net assets (20% × 520,000 = 104,000), goodwill would be 84,000, so always check which method the question uses.

Worked example: cash flows from operating activities (indirect method)

Illustrative figures for a statement of cash flows under IAS 7.

ItemAdjustmentAmount
Profit before taxStarting point80,000
Add depreciationNon-cash expense15,000
Increase in trade receivablesCash not yet received(10,000)
Decrease in inventoryCash released5,000
Increase in trade payablesCash not yet paid4,000
Cash generated from operationsTotal, before interest and tax paid94,000

Then deduct interest and tax paid to reach net cash from operating activities.

How do UK markers grade accounting work?

UK markers award 70 and above for correctly formatted statements, workings that are clearly referenced, the relevant standard cited for each treatment and ratios explained in terms of business performance. Work loses marks for missing workings, wrong formats, ratios without commentary and mixing IFRS and FRS 102 terminology.

Higher-mark workCommon mark-losers
Statements in the required formatWrong or inconsistent formats
Referenced workings (W1, W2…)Final figures with no workings
Standard cited for each treatmentTreatments without authority
Ratios interpreted with reasonsRatios listed without commentary
Consistent IFRS or FRS 102 termsMixing 'profit and loss account' with 'statement of profit or loss'

Where do students lose marks in accounting?

Most lost marks in accounting come from treatments that do not follow the standard and from workings that markers cannot follow.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
No workingsNumber every working and cross-reference it
Wrong standard or treatmentName the standard and apply its rules
Proportionate and fair value NCI mixed upCheck which method the question specifies
Signs wrong in cash flow adjustmentsAsk whether cash went up or down for each item
Ratios without interpretationExplain the cause and compare with prior years or peers
Inconsistent units or roundingState the unit, such as $000, and round consistently

Do you help with consolidated accounts?

Yes. Tutors work through goodwill, non-controlling interests, intra-group adjustments and consolidated statements step by step.

What is the difference between IFRS and FRS 102?

IFRS are international standards used by listed groups and many companies worldwide. FRS 102 is the main UK GAAP standard used by most UK private companies. FRS 102 is based on IFRS principles but is simpler, with fewer disclosures and some different accounting treatments and terminology.

How do I prepare a statement of cash flows using the indirect method?

Start with profit before tax, add back non-cash items such as depreciation, adjust for changes in inventory, receivables and payables, deduct interest and tax paid to find operating cash flow, then add investing and financing cash flows and reconcile to the change in cash.

How do I calculate goodwill on consolidation?

Goodwill is the consideration paid plus the non-controlling interest at acquisition, minus the fair value of the subsidiary's identifiable net assets at the acquisition date. It is tested for impairment each year under IAS 36 rather than amortised under IFRS.

What is IFRS 15's five-step model?

IFRS 15 recognises revenue in five steps: identify the contract, identify the performance obligations, determine the transaction price, allocate the price to the performance obligations and recognise revenue when or as each obligation is satisfied.

How do I write a ratio analysis report?

Calculate profitability, liquidity, efficiency and gearing ratios for at least two years or two companies, then explain the reasons behind changes using information from the case, link them to business performance and finish with conclusions and limitations, such as different accounting policies.

Do you help with US GAAP or the CPA exam?

Yes. Tutors explain US GAAP treatments and how they differ from IFRS, and help with college accounting homework and CPA-style practice questions, alongside our core UK and IFRS support.

Can you help with Ind AS or CA exams in India?

Yes. Tutors explain Indian Accounting Standards, which are converged with IFRS, and help with BCom and CA exam questions, showing full workings.

Is my accounting work kept confidential?

Yes. Your files and details are used only to help you and are not shared with your school or university. See our privacy policy.
