What is cost accounting?

Cost accounting is the branch of accounting that records, classifies and analyses the costs of making products or providing services, so managers can set prices, control costs and make decisions. Unlike financial accounting, which reports to outsiders, cost accounting is mainly for internal use.

  • Elements of cost: materials, labour and overheads
  • Costing methods: job, batch, contract, process and service costing
  • Costing techniques: absorption, marginal, activity-based and standard costing
  • Control: budgets and variance analysis
  • Decisions: cost-volume-profit analysis and relevant costing

For contribution and break-even, see our marginal costing page.

Costing methods and techniques explained

The right costing method depends on what the business produces, and the technique depends on the decision being made.

Method or techniqueUsed when
Job costingProducts are made to individual customer orders
Batch costingIdentical items are produced in batches
Contract costingLong projects such as construction span accounting periods
Process costingProduction flows continuously through processes
Service costingCosts are measured per service unit, such as per passenger-km
Absorption costingAll production costs, including fixed overheads, go into inventory
Marginal costingOnly variable costs go into inventory; decisions focus on contribution
Activity-based costingOverheads are driven by different activities
Standard costingExpected costs are set and compared with actual results

How does overhead absorption work?

Overhead absorption charges indirect costs to products in stages.

  1. Allocate overheads that belong entirely to one cost centre.
  2. Apportion shared overheads on a fair basis, such as floor area or headcount.
  3. Reapportion service department costs to production departments (direct, step-down or reciprocal method).
  4. Calculate a predetermined overhead absorption rate, for example per machine hour.
  5. Absorb overheads into products and find any under- or over-absorption at the period end.

Worked example: material price and usage variances

Illustrative data: the standard is 2 kg of material per unit at $5 per kg. In the period, 1,000 units were made using 2,100 kg that cost $10,290 in total ($4.90 per kg).

VarianceWorkingResult
Standard cost of actual output1,000 units × 2 kg × $5$10,000
Material price variance(Standard price − actual price) × actual quantity = ($5.00 − $4.90) × 2,100$210 favourable
Material usage variance(Standard quantity − actual quantity) × standard price = (2,000 − 2,100) × $5$500 adverse
Total material variance$10,000 − $10,290$290 adverse
Check$210 F + $500 A$290 A

A cheaper material that is used less efficiently is a classic interdependence to discuss in your answer.

Worked example: break-even and margin of safety

Illustrative CVP data: selling price $50 per unit, variable cost $30 per unit, fixed costs $40,000, budgeted sales 3,000 units.

MeasureWorkingResult
Contribution per unit$50 − $30$20
Break-even point$40,000 ÷ $202,000 units
C/S ratio$20 ÷ $5040%
Break-even revenue$40,000 ÷ 0.40$100,000
Units for a $10,000 profit($40,000 + $10,000) ÷ $202,500 units
Margin of safety(3,000 − 2,000) ÷ 3,0001,000 units, or about 33.3%

Worked example: why absorption and marginal profits differ

Illustrative data: 5,000 units produced, 4,000 sold, fixed production overhead $20,000 and no opening inventory.

StepWorking
Fixed overhead absorption rate$20,000 ÷ 5,000 units = $4 per unit
Closing inventory5,000 − 4,000 = 1,000 units
Fixed overhead carried forward in inventory (absorption)1,000 × $4 = $4,000
Profit differenceAbsorption profit is $4,000 higher than marginal profit

When inventory rises, absorption costing reports the higher profit; when it falls, marginal costing does.

Where do students lose marks in cost accounting?

Most lost marks in cost accounting come from wrong quantities in variance formulas, poor layouts and missing interpretation. Tutors check your work against a list like this one.

Mark-loserWhat to do instead
Using budgeted output instead of actual output for flexed standardsFlex the standard to actual production
No F or A label on variancesLabel every variance favourable or adverse
Abnormal loss valued at the wrong costValue it at the same cost per unit as good output
Mixing fixed and variable costs in CVPUse only variable costs in contribution
Messy workingsUse clear tables and number each working
Numbers without explanationGive possible causes and links between variances

What cost accounting assessments look like, and what markers want

Cost accounting is assessed in several formats, and each one is marked on different things. Tutors help you understand the brief and the marking criteria before you start.

AssessmentWhat markers look for

Tools and software for cost accounting

Cost accounting is learned by hand and applied in spreadsheets and business systems.

Cost Accounting tutoring: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between cost accounting and financial accounting?

Cost accounting analyses the costs of products and activities for internal decisions; financial accounting reports the results of the whole business to outsiders in standard formats.

What is the difference between marginal and absorption costing?

Absorption costing includes fixed production overheads in the cost of inventory; marginal costing treats them as period costs. Profits differ when inventory levels change.

Can you help with process costing and equivalent units?

Yes. Tutors cover equivalent units, normal and abnormal losses and gains, FIFO and weighted average methods, and joint and by-products.

What is an abnormal loss in process costing?

An abnormal loss is a loss above the expected (normal) level. It is valued like good output and written off to the profit and loss account, so it does not raise the cost of good units.

Do you help with activity-based costing?

Yes. Tutors explain cost pools and drivers, calculate driver rates and product costs, and compare ABC with traditional absorption costing.

How do you calculate a material price variance?

Material price variance = (standard price − actual price) × actual quantity purchased or used. It is favourable when the actual price is lower.

How do you calculate labour variances?

Labour rate variance = (standard rate − actual rate) × actual hours paid; labour efficiency variance = (standard hours for actual output − actual hours worked) × standard rate.

How do you calculate the break-even point?

Break-even point in units = fixed costs ÷ contribution per unit. In revenue, divide fixed costs by the contribution to sales (C/S) ratio.

What is the margin of safety?

The margin of safety is how far sales can fall before the business makes a loss: (budgeted sales − break-even sales) ÷ budgeted sales.

Can you help with CA Intermediate cost accounting?

Yes. Tutors help with the CA Intermediate Cost and Management Accounting paper, using ICAI study material, past questions and exam layouts.

Do you help with ACCA Management Accounting and Performance Management?

Yes. Tutors cover costing, budgeting, variances and decision-making in the style of ACCA MA and PM questions.

Can you help with budgeting?

Yes. Tutors cover functional and master budgets, cash budgets, flexible budgets and budgetary control.

Can you help with material costing methods like FIFO?

Yes. Tutors prepare stores ledger cards with FIFO and weighted average pricing and explain the effect on profit and inventory value.

What is an overhead absorption rate?

An overhead absorption rate is budgeted overheads divided by a budgeted activity level, such as machine or labour hours. It is used to charge overheads to products.

What causes under- or over-absorption of overheads?

It happens when actual overheads or actual activity differ from the budget. Under-absorption is charged and over-absorption credited to the profit and loss account.

What are relevant costs?

Relevant costs are future, incremental cash costs that differ between decision options. Sunk and committed costs are not relevant.

Can I get help with a single cost accounting question?

Yes. Send the question and your deadline for a quote; single questions are a common request.

Can I get cost accounting homework help the same day?

Often, yes. Short question sets can usually be explained the same day, depending on tutor availability.

Is it allowed to get cost accounting help?

Yes. Tutoring, worked examples and feedback are a normal part of learning. You should use the explanations to understand the method and submit your own work in line with your school's or university's academic integrity rules. See our academic integrity policy.

Is my cost accounting work kept confidential?

Yes. Your files and details are used only to help you and are not shared with your school or university. See our privacy policy.

Can I get cost accounting assignment help online?

Yes. You can get cost accounting assignment help online through live 1-to-1 lessons. Your tutor works through absorption and marginal costing, variances, budgets and CVP analysis step by step, so you understand the method and complete your own assignment with confidence.
